looking to spend $200 and under, just need it to read the check engine codes

The cheapest scanner you can buy for $70 or so will give you the codes just as accurately as any.

why buy a scanner, just take your car to auto zone and have them to read the codes for free.

Auto X-ray makes a couple of inexpensive units which seem to work OK. Check their website.
