The sunrise has nothing to do with the formation of Thar desert. The Thar desert is formed as the south-west monsoon becomes almost dry when it reaches the north-west side of India.
The south-west monsoon brings lot of moisture from the oceans of southern hemisphere and brings rain to all parts of India(except Tamilnadu state which gets rain during the north-east monsoon). The monsoon first crosses southern Indian peninsula, blows over Bay of Bengal reaches North-east India, gets deflected towards west by the mighty Himalayas mountain range, empties all the moisture during its journey towards North-west India and reaches the Thar desert as a dry monsoon system. That is why a desert has formed there.

There are many factors that affect this phenomenon. Every place on earth get approximately same amount of sun per year it is the intensity that is different because of weather pattern and other things that affect the location as far as seasonal and day to day changes.

India has few very hot spots. Thar is in the west, so is kach, but Rajahs state is all desert and gets very hot also.

India is surrounded by ocean on three sides. Most of the rain and snow is generated due to presence of large bodies of water, they form clouds containing moisture that condense as it rises and comes down as rain or snow.

Mountain and now a days man made structures force them to rise to clear them, so on one side of these obstacle you have more rain or snow and on the other side you have no rain or very little rain or snow, as most of it has already fallen.
