if your local library doesn't have it, ask if they can borrow it from a library outside their system. one of my jobs at the library is to order books from wherever I can find them to lend to our patrons. ask about interlibrary loan.

Murray Bridge showman honoured for circus contribution

FIFTY-one years of trick-cycling, juggling and circus management has resulted in a Murray Bridge showman being honoured as patron of the South Australian Showmen's Guild.
Robert Perry was announced a patron of the guild earlier this month and joins Member for Schubert Ivan Venning, who has been a patron for many years for his involvement with the Crystal Brook and Royal Adelaide shows.

The award honours the contribution made by showmen to their industry.

Mr Perry was born into his family's Perry Bros Circus, which during the 1930s was one of the biggest circuses in Australia.

"That (the circus) was all I knew," Mr Perry said.

"If I had a cut, I used to bleed sawdust."

When his father died in 1976, Mr Perry and his brother Halby took over the business and took the circus into a new era.

During the pinnacle of his management with the Perry Bros Circus in the 1980s, Mr Perry operated a three-ring show and attracted the talent of Tommy Hanlon.

The Perry Bros Circus sold out to the Stardust Circus in 1993 due to family conflict.

Today Mr Perry's home reflects more than 150 years of circus memorabilia, with old posters, photographs, relics, plaques and certificates.

Among his achievements Mr Perry received a Melvin Jones award for his involvement with the Lions Club lion-a-thon and Circus Personality of the Year as voted by the Circus Fans of Australia, a body made up of circus fanatics around the country.

Mr Perry moved to Murray Bridge with his wife Bernice 13 years ago, opening River City Amusements, a business hiring merry-go-rounds and amusements for shows which he continues to operate as a "hobby". Mr Perry is hoping to publish a book about his circus life with former Murray Valley Standard editor Terry Wilksch, with the manuscript titled 'Sawdust and Headaches'.
