Why do people throw pairs of shoes tied by their laces into overhead electrical wires on telegraph poles?

My mother told me what fernwood said. Why are people giving him thumbs down? Is it just because some people don't like drugs and are reacting? That's not a good reason to give a thumbs down to this question. Eric's answer was interesting too. He's getting lots of thumbs down. I wonder if it's because some people just don't feel comfortable with what he's talking about and are not considering that it may be a genuine answer. What do you think?

I just want to know why I saw shoes hanging up there when I walking home today. I thought it was funny and had no idea. So far only fernwood and eric have given explanations but they are getting all these thumbs down so I'm really confused now. Could there really be drug dealers or killers in my street? Why were the shoes there? Please tell me what you think :)

yeah ya know I see that all of the time and I live in a tiny town (population 900) in the midwest. I am pretty sure that there are no crack houses in the middle of the cornfields (when I see those shoes over the lines by the road) and I am also pretty sure that we do not have any gang activity or killings since the last killing we have had in the past 80 years involved the cops shooting some mentally disturbed young man.- the cops got away with it. so how do their theories add up to seeing shoes hung over power lines in tiny places here?? Like I said, it is moronic kids that have nothing better to do than to play keep away with someone's shoes..it's either that or tipping cows

when you kill someone in the the hood you take their shoes and throw them over the wires as a trophy and it also tells the crackheads that there are drug dealers there if they want a hit

Because they prefer walking home from a night out in bare feet.

If you see the shoes you know that there is a drug house close by.That's what I was told by one of he drug dealers.
