...that I had tears in my eyes when I saw a few years ago the English documentary by Channel -4 The Dying Rooms. Please watch this short video and does anyone know if there still are "dying rooms" in China ?
What a desperate situation in China.... but... doesn't Nature need little girls in order to have little boys ?!
The male/female ratio in China in some areas is already 156:100 !!!!!

Sorry but I could not watch the entire documentary. You see, I have one gorgeous son and 4 daughters.
I think that in 1,000 years from now people will refer to our era as the 'upper middle ages' or 'upper dark ages'.

That one-child-policy.... isn't it pure stupidity ? Stupidity on three counts :
(1) if some program hasn't worked for a long time, we change it !
(2) Wouldn't it be cheaper and more decent to drop condoms from airplanes ?!
(3) Wouldn't it be cleverer too, in addition to giving condoms for free, to establish some sort of export program(?) of little baby girls to Europe and the Americas ?.... There are millions of couples here who can not have children. If there was such a program my wife and I might very well adopt one such cutie and see her safe and see her grow up as a human being as all those those baby girls are !! It INFURIATES me !!!

Hi " tranceba... "
So true !!! Those two newborns who just arrived at that miserable orphanage.... crying with a sound of imploring, calling out for their Mums !!!! ...with nappy rash on their FACES.... because they are never washed.... Or the toddlers tied up, their little arms and legs to their bed posts during the night only have their little fingers bitten off by rats during the night !!!! The world has to know about this....

Me too, I cried buckets. I believe the tragedy of female infanticide is still going on in one way or another, because of the fact that boys are valued more highly than girls because they are expected to keep their parents in their old age. You are talking about a massive cultural shift or a lot of political pressure to put a stop to this. Sadly the politicians - or rulers, I should say, since China is a dictatorship - have made the problem worse with the one-child policy.

However, the whole idea of that policy was to reduce population growth - and a massive gender imbalance is, as you point out, bound to have that effect, so they would probably say it's a good thing.

As for the dying rooms themselves - I don't know if they still exist but I would be very interested to find out. Thanks for asking, have a star.

Hey, yes, of course you're right about what the Chinese regime SHOULD do - but if you take a look at their appalling human rights record, I don't think you should be surprised at anything they do to their hapless population. My challenge to you: Stop buying goods that are made in China. My husband and I tried this - and we tried REALLY hard - right after Tiananmen Square but we had to give up within days. Our governments are all complicit in what goes on in China and effectively so are we, because we do business with them. If you have an answer to that you are a better person than I am, Gunga Din. Seriously, I'd love to hear any suggestions.

Red Chrome, I saw the documentry a couple of years ago. It is the saddest things I have ever seen. It defies humanity to treat anyone let alone little children in this way. That their short lives will never know love, a cuddle, a smile or warmth and will be filled with the most unimaginable suffering. These poor, poor little human beings.

Much of Sigmund Freud's research and findings are no longer deemed relevant. The question doesn't make sense in any event. It's like saying: given that Martha Stewart couldn't stay out of jail what makes Oprah Winfrey think that she can cook? EDIT @ MAX NO LONGER deemed relevant by the scholars and scientists of psychology. Period. EDIT Jessica whilst I agree with most of what you say - in fact from what I remember you have to test out hypotheses over and over thent they become theories and then theories eventually become facts if they hold.

I used to comfort myself with the thought that in the long run, girls would be more valuable as there were so few of them. Wrong. It just means that men share women, now, so their lives are harder than ever.
I wish Madonna had gone to China and adopted a little girl.

I am too scared to look. I can imagine what I will see and cannot afford to allow myself to be depressed.
Maybe I will look tonight when I am feeling braver. These things kill me, with two little girls of my own.
