Do you think it was a wise decision to send so many fire personnel up the twin towers on September 11th 2001.

A colleague of mine, who is in the UK fire service, said that a initial scouting/recon should of been carried first out by smaller (and minimal) groups of fire fighters, with other stations (USA: ladders) on the ground awaiting instructions, and this back-up should not have consisted of such a plethora of personnel, as seen on the day in question situation.

What is your opinion?

Americans: I am asking for a UK FIREFIGHTING opinion, NOT an American perspective.

Sounds like your friend is trying to gain some knowledge from that tragedy and this is a good thing.

Remind him/her that decisions had to be made in nearly nanosecond time frames and I would be willing to bet odds that every fire fighter can look back on actions taken during the time of an incident and see how something could have been better.

It is always easy to say what you would do now, 6 years removed. Not in their wildest dreams did anyone at the site believe that the buildings would collapse. Therefore, there was no reason to send in "scouting" parties to probe the building or its stability. Sure, now it seems like the prudent thing to do and I am sure many departments have learned from the events, but to sit around and criticize those who were there making snap decisions at the time is just bad form.

Hind sight is always 20/20. When there is a fire, firemen try to rescue people in the burning building. Give those who died credit for doing the best they could. You have no way of knowing how many people were saved by those brave heroes.

They run into burning homes with smiles on their faces! They rescue human beings, shop pets, mitigate materials loss and do in spite of they might in very stressful circumstances to make existence better for something individuals - and for an insufficient income. what's to in contrast to? (My father and 3 uncles have been all firemen in an excellent city.) you reside in a city the place there is somewhat some 'hatin' in direction of fireman? What city? What planet?

I hope when I visit England again there is no fire!

I'd hate like hell to be hanging out the window while "Monty Python's Flying Circus" scouts out the situation below.
