i would have to say that one has succeeded in failing, their goal has been accomplished!

it would depend on your definition of failure. If you set out to fail, meaning not succeeding at a difficult task, then you have failed. But, if you set out to fail, meaning letting someone else succeed than you have succeeded.

I have successfully done both, meaning I have failed knowing full well that would probably be the outcome, and I have successfully let another beat me while letting them think they were successful.

I think this is a really good question?

Erm, I don't know both? Neither?

If failing could help other people, or failing in itself could project some positive values then maybe it is a success.

Possibly an example of this would be when Wile E Coyote finally caught up with the road runner and then when after all of those years of trying to catch him and kill him with hilarious but awful methods, he just lets the guy go free.

Failure like that can be beautiful

You have succeeded in failing, and failed in succeeding; but neither is inherently good or bad, especially where deception is intended for a greater success. Failing can be a good thing, if your desires are realized by it.
