My son went through a phase like this, I wouldn't worry to much he probably thinks he has a nappy on, he will eventually realise he hasn't but it does take a little time to get used to and I'm pretty sure your son will be sorted way before Jan. Leave the trousers on if you want to cure this quicker.

Let him choose some new pants (sponge bob or his favourite character). Buy some spare ones that he can change into if he has an accident and let him know that you are carrying a spare pair. Reward him when he starts to suceed.Encourage him to be independant by saying "show me if you can use the big toilet" and praise him even if he's not succesfull straight away. Make sure he can reach the seat, a step stool helps and reasure him that he will not fall down the big hole. Show him how to use the toilet paper and respond quickly when he asks. If he isnt asking to go to the toilet tell him you need to go and offer the toilet to him at the same time. I'm sure it won't be long before he is independant.

I am a nanny for a 3.5 year old (I've been his nanny since he was 4 months old). I can usually tell if he has to go by him squeezing it or fidgeting with it. I ask him when I see this happening and even if he says no we "try" anyway and 99% of the time he goes. I would just look for little cues and just keep reminding him that he is a big boy and doesn't have a diaper on anymore. He should be fine by Jan.

my grandson is very close in age to your son & we have exactly the same prob if he wears his pants only he will tell his mum when he needs the toilet if he wears his trousers only he will tell her i would use the trouser method myself after all many men don't bother wearing underwear they like to go commando so why should'nt your son pants create the feeling of oh im in a nappy so i'll have a wee

I agree with Mandy...just leave his trousers on with no pants underneath...one layer may help him remember....Jan is still a way off and I bet he'll have got it by then. Aslo go for the big old celebration when he does it right.....clapping cheering a treat...he'll be more likely to remember then.

My 3 year old started to revert back to this. I went out and bought those cool alert pull ups from huggies. I said, if you are going to wet in your pants like this then you will have to go back to dipeys. He had maybe two accidents in those cool alerts and he was ready to go back to underwear. and now he has no problem.
