Ugly Stik, by far.

Shakespeare's Ugly Stik is the leader of the pack. An excellent fishing rod for the money. As far as quality there are better. For example, St. Croix, Lamiglas, G. Loomis, yet the Ugly Stik is the best deal for the money.

Top selling would probably be what one could find at Wal-Mart or another discount/department type store. But those are surely not the best. Unless you have lots of money to dispose of, try to keep it under $100 or even $75. I believe Shimano make some of the best value fishing equipment available.

In total agreement with Macarthur, G.Loomis, Lamiglass and St Croix are about your best on the market, but there be a substantial price that goes with them. Shakespeare's Ugly Stik is the leader of the pack, because of the quality at an affordable price ;)...

Ugly Sticks, Shimano, and Penn. I just got the new Shimano Stradic 4000, and it is awesome! But any of the said brand names work great. Good luck fishing!
