Hi all

I am from Europe, and I've always been an admirer of the United States. I just love the way everything feels free, and just the way the country operates. I have always wantes to join the US Military, and I know in order to do that, I need a Green Card. I have read about joining the US military in other questions here, but I have some extra quesions:

1. If I have a Green Card, is it just for me to go and speak with a recruiter (lets say from USMC), and show him the Green Card and say that I want to join?

2. How many years do I have to serve before I get a US citizenship?

3. If I join lets say the USMC, how are my chances to become a Scout/Sniper if I don't have US citizenship? And lets say that I have the citizenship after serving x years, will my chances to become a S/S be less because I'm not American-born?

I really hope someone can answer my questions!

as long as you are a Permanent resident( unconditional Green card) yeap, just pop on down to your local recruiter

you may apply for citizenship after serving either 1 or 2 years Active duty, I forget which. the wait time is waived, as are most if not all of the fees involved( a HUGE savings right there)

your ASVAB scores among other things determine your eligibility for all jobs. If citizenship is required to be a scout or sniper, than once you have it, as long as you otherwise qualify and there is a slot, you have the same chance as any one else of getting it.

If otherwise qualified, you should be able to get into sniper school. There is a fast track to citizenship following your initial enlistment because you must be a US citizen to reenlist. The Marines generally require a 3-year enlistment.

The second link is for the naturalization of members of the Armed Forces and provided for by Title 8, Chapter 12, Subchapter III, Part II of the United States Code, § 1439.

To join the U.S. military here are the minimum requirements for non-U.S. Citizens
1. have a valid work authorization card I-765
2. Be 18 Yrs of age or 17 with parental consent
3. Be in good physical condition
4. Have a high school graduation certificate, or GED

As for military service leading to U.S. citizenship, yes it will help. U.S. military persons are exempt from the processing fees needed for citizenship, and the wait time required to apply for citizenship is reduced from 5 years to 2 years. Usually a 4 year enlistment will do to get U.S. Citizenship.

Greetings. if you want to be a sniper you have to be profiled. you have to be high intelligence. not get along well with people and tend to be a loner. have to have psychotic tendencies such as no empity with the ones you target. no conscience or it will drive you crazy in no time the killing on command. Many foreigners serve in our military. Can't get enough Americans now dumb enough to want to be killed or permanently crippled from combat duty in Iraq. don't want to get into a partisan war, it is always nasty, like Vietnam was. Do they not have U.S.M.C. recruiters there in your country? if not you have a computer or access to one. contact a Marine recruiter and get the straight skivvy on how the service is hanging at the moment. he can give you a lot better intel then you will get here. and his won't be binding either, so watch how much of your butt you are signing off when you enlist. You do know, I suppose, that the Marines are considered our version of the old German Waffen SS and have one of the lowest survival rates in battle of any of our services? good luck. Semper Fi.

I would contact a recruiter and get the real scoop on this. I know my father joined the RAF back in WWII, but switched back over to the AAC, when we joined the war.

You are thinking of America of the past. IT NO Longer EXISTS.
1. a green card good for 10 years. It allows you to live in the US without renewing your visa.
2. I think it is 2 years but I could be wrong.
3. There well be some jobs in military you can not get.
