Depends. One of my local vets owns his own practice. Prices have spiked dramatically in the past couple of years. I think the money is going to his head. He's lost lots of customers. Yes I think he overpays himself and doesnt give his employees what they deserve.
Humane society and aspca vets are underpaid. They either get paid by the government or public donations, I'm not really sure. But that just tells you that they aren't doing it for the money, they're doing it for the animals.

Compared to who? They had to go to school for a long time to get their degree and they perform a valuable service. My vet, though expensive, has a nice office with several vets and I'm very satisfied. Of course, my cats (all 5 of them) are very healthy, too.
Before you think the vet is overpaid, you need to realize that a part of the money you pay for a vet appointment also pays the salary of the office people and pays for the actual office rent (this is called "overhead").
Sometimes you can find a vet that operates out of her truck and will make house calls. Price might be a little less, too, because there's less overhead.

I think that some of them are. We have over 7 vets within a 20 mile radius. They all charge different prices. I think that my vet is a happy medium. Plus, he is very good, kind and an animal lover. When I caught my Orange Kitty, he was a stray..he went missing for 3 days. When he came back up, half his face was torn off. I took him to my vets to be put to sleep. And instead, he saved him. He gave him all his test, shots, flea treatment, fixed and a 2 1/2 hr surgery, with over 30 stitches in his face... it should have been like over $900.00. He charged me $40.00 and a coffee! He said that he did it because he loves animals and wanted to give the poor thing a chance to have a good life after being a stray. He knew that I would give him a good home, plus he remembered that 3 yrs ago, I had to put down my 16 yr old orange kitty, Spud.

anyone who goes into the veterinary profession surely does not do it for the money! Vets dont even make as much as you think they do. Unless you own your own practice or are in a specialty the pay is not that great.
do you think that human drs are overpaid? because vets go to school for just as long (if not longer if board certified in 1 or more specialties) as human drs.
prices may be going up at your vet because the price of insurance for vets is going up. because people are trying to sue thier vets for stupid things you might be paying more.
and if you are talking about prices at a specialty practice like an emergency service or an oncologist you are most likely paying for a board certified veterinarian and it is usually worth the money.
if you are worried about the prices at you veterinarian get pet insurance.

To answer your question in general nobody in a free market society is overpaid, but thats just the economic libertarian in me speaking. I wouldn't know what to specifically say about a vet.

No,not really. When you think about everything a veterinarian has to do,they really could be called underpaid.A vet has to know about every part of an animal's anatomy. They have to set broken bones, remove tumors, pull teeth, deliver puppies and kittens,do all kinds of surgery, dispense medications, groom and board their patients, and try to diagnose what's wrong with a patient who can't tell them anything, because they can't talk! They also have to pay for equipment, medications, and pay their staff. And when their patients get too old or sick, they help them to die. They also have to be a bit of a psychologist,as they comfort the owners of the animals they care for when the animals are dying. So,although it may SEEM,as if they are terribly expensive, when you compare what they are paid to what a human doctor is paid,it's not very much at all.

They go to school a long time to do what they do, and they have to live and make money and pay off their student loans, so I would say no they are not overpaid!

No. I don't think so. They actually deserve their pay checks.
I heard that vets spend more than 8 years on their studies and practical exercises before becoming vets. So, if doctors could get a good pay, so could vets.

compared to vet nurses i think they are.. we are not paid very well at all.. they work hard for their money and did alot study to get where they are.. the money you pay a vet has to cover, rent, wages, drugs. insurance, instruments, machines, seviceing of machines, licences.. and so on.. vets have to be mulitly talented, unlike doctors who specialise in either orthopedics, dental, behavoiural, surgery. vets do it all and need to know it all.. i dont think they are over paid.
