Assuming you're talking about the little foot-long common mackerel, it's not that it can't be farmed, but more that it's not economical to do so. Farm-raising fish is expensive, so it only really makes sense if it's fish you can sell for a high price, like salmon or trout. Mackerel are one of the few species in the ocean which is not overharvested, so there are plenty of them out there, and a seiner can easily load up on them and sell them for much less than farm-raised ones would cost.

On the long range sport boats out of San Diego mackerel are often caught as bait and kept live in tanks on the boat for days or weeks. These tanks are no more than about six feet across, so you don't need a huge tank to keep the fish healthy.

Now if you're talking about the much bigger king mackerel, that's another story. You'd need a huge tank or pen and clean offshore water, and it would probably take several years (and a huge amount of food) to grow the fish to salable size.

Either way, I doubt there's any mackerel farming going on.

Mackerel can't be farmed because its an oily fish that needs open space to swim. Also mackerel travel is huge schools of millions.

No mackerel is currently farmed. Some Tunas are rounded up and penned like cattle, but they are caught in the wild first.

Mackerel can not be farmed , due to it's some life span pecularities ..
for example : it is a non-stop swimmer.,we can't rear them in a controlled or restricted bounderies.

thank you.........

no they cant be farmed and they dont even try because of how easily they can be caught by trawlers in the correct water temperature
