while you are getting close to mileage for timing belt [it is best to replace all timing componants and waterpump at the same time], the transmission fluid should be serviced and flushed [this car takes a special volvo only fluid] at 30k mile intervals. watch for rear brake pad wear [have had a couple of calipers to sieze on customer cars but no big deal]
if you SAVE for the routine services and do them, you will be able to stay away from a dealers show-room for as long as you want.

Generally, anything with less the 10,000 miles per year is the best, up to 15,000 per year is still ok. Your car has over somewhere around 18,000 per year, which is well over the average. That does not automatically mean your car is in bad shape, but it is a fair indicator of how much wear and tear the car has been through. You might have the car checked just to be sure.
The good news is it is a Volvo. If this was a Ford I would tell you to expect major problems and repairs within the next year. But, with a Volvo you can expect to put another 25,000 or 50,000 miles on it before it will need anything other than brakes or tires. Some people will tell you that Volvos are expensive to get repaired, but my own experience is that even if the individual repairs do cost more, you have to do them with far less frequency that other cars. (Of course, this assumes you get the oils and other fluids checked regularly and don't drive like a mad-woman.)

RE:
Is this TOO MUCH mileage for a 2003 Volvo S40?
I recently purchased a 2003 Volvo S40 and the odometer is about to change to 74,000 miles. I am a girl and don't know much about cars and am starting to worry it will start having expensive problems...two questions:
1. Does my car have too many miles?
2. Are Volvo's reliable or do they...

The fact that '08 models are coming out makes this car five years old. Average annual mileage for any car is about 15,000 miles. That puts this vehicle right on schedule.
As far as reliability is concerned, I would not recommend a Volvo any more. They used to be some of the most bulletproof cars going but now reliability has fallen off and they are extremely expensive to repair.

Never owned a volvo, but I'll say this. I have a 1995 Chevy S10 pickup with 160,000 miles on it, and it runs great.
The best advice I can give you is to pick up a Haynes manual for your car. Lots of good info in there, and you might learn something.

74k miles is a lot for an 03 model, and volvos are ok as long as you have them serviced every now and then.

i wouldnt say 74k is high mileage it is for a car that age, however they are probably motorway miles which means its only been in 5th gear doing all thse miles it will be ok aslong as it hasnt been abused.
