I have a cousin who wants to be a Navy Corpsman and be assigned to FMF(Fleet Marine Force).

He says he heard that a Corpsman will be able to switch to the Marines if he wants to..is this true?

No, he will just be treated like on and have to serve with them.

Corpsmen are Navy Medics and all Navy Medics serve with the Marines; so for all intents and purposes they are Marines.

There has been a law for over sixty years which permits direct transfer between the Navy Hospital Corps and the Marine Corps. However, he must first complete Field Medical Service School and acquire the Naval Enlisted Classification of HM-8404 (Field Medical Service Technician).

Navy Corpsmen are navy Corpsmen, even while serving with the Fleet Marines. They live, eat, sleep and deploy with them and are "de facto marines" but are still in the larger Navy.

Not all Corpsmen get to serve with the fleet marines, most in fact serve aboard ships at sea and at naval medical facilities around the globe. If he wants to serve with the Fleet Marines, he needs to make that clear to his recruiter and make sure it's in his enlistment contract. He can always volunteer to do it later, once he arrives at his first assignment, but then it's 2-3 yrs of changing sheets in the sick bay before he can go be with the Leathernecks.
