No. A regular DVD doesn't have the fine detail in it for HD. A regular DVD can't be displayed in HD. An HD player and TV will display a regular DVD, just not in HD format.

I would need more information to be exact (model names/numbers) however let's try to generalize a bit.

Your TV is rated up to a certain level of HD. As in 480, 720, 1080.

Your DVD player can broadcast at levels of HD it was designed to do. Same levels 480, 720. 1080.

HDMI is only the connection type and doesn't determine HD format. HDMI is used to transfer video and audio on the same line in a data format to the TV.

So if you connect a DVD player rated up to 720 to a TV rated at 1080 then you will see a picture in 720.

Also if you connect a DVD player that is rated up to 1080 to a TV rated at 720 then you will see a picture in 720.

The DVD player can never exceed what the TV can do. Also many types of connections can do HD presentation. I would suggest looking at your manuals for both products and find out what they can do. If your DVD player can't play in HD to your TV then you won't see your movies in HD format.

Hope this helps, also for those that might point it out I did leave the I / P endings from the numbers on purpose for simplicity.
