Our stomach's wall is surrounded by a mucus membrane. The mucus membrane keeps the acid in the confines of the stomach where food is digested.
If we have a breakdown of the membrane wall, acid starts eating the stomach lining. This is called an ulcer. Sometime acid will come up the esophagus and causing a burning sensation called heartburn or acid reflux disease.

your stomach contains a mucous lining that can stand the hydrochloric acid in your digestive system. When you overindulge in spicy foods, you get an excess of acid, which we call "heartburn", and you take something like Alka Seltzer to NEUTRALIZE the excess acid. Alka Seltzer chemically is called a BASE.

Because the acid in our stomach comes naturally from our body and is not meant to harm the body.

the lining in your stomach protects you....when it gets through, it's called an ulcer. and it's not strong enough to turn you into a blubbering mess.

Hmmm...and why is it that when we puke or spit, whatever the stuff lands on doesn't disinegrate? (that would be kinda cool)
