How would you translate the word "brainstorming" to spanish?

Hi we also use brainstorming and it is accepted by the Academy but you can also use:

sesión de:
bombardeo de ideas (bomb ideas)
generar ideas

There are some words that just cannot be translated. This is a very tough one.
But here goes and it's not going to be pretty:
Let's begin with what brainstorming means in English. The word brainstorming is not on the Oxford English Dictionary website, but brainstorm is. The OED says-

brainstorm
• noun 1 informal a moment in which one is suddenly unable to think clearly. 2 a spontaneous group discussion to produce ideas.

• verb have a spontaneous discussion to produce ideas.

If what you mean by brainstorm is noun 1 then in Spanish you would say "repetinamente carente de la capacidad para pensar logicamente."

If what you means is noun 2 then in Spanish you would say "junta de cabezas."

If you mean the verb brainstorm then in Spanish you would say "juntarse las cabezas" or "hacer junta de cabezas."

Now I was surprised by the answerer who said that that the Academy accepts the word. I imagine he means the Royal Spanish Language Academy, la Real Académia Española de la Lengua. Their dictionary is the Spanish equivalent of the OED. I searched the RAE online dictionary and it says that brainstorm and brainstorming are not in the dictionary. So much for that.

Use whichever of my answers fits best. The thing about translating is that the translator has to understand the ideas that the words represent in each language. While specific words cannot always be translated, concepts and ideas can.

Both lluvia de ideas and tormenta de ideas are correct. I'm a native speaker and that's how we said it @ school.
