In restaurants, shops, offices, classrooms on the street EVERYWHERE !! Why? why? WHY?
Don't they know it's dirty dangerous and disgusting? YUK !!

Sorry, PART OF US do like this.
But I can tell u that such situation is gradually changing.

in my opinion,it is really a bad behaviour about some chinese spit anywhere.but it can not say that chinese people spit so much.most chinese people also don't like it and many cities forbind this.but still have some people do that.may be we should charge them some finds and give them some time to improve greatly in a short time.

I have been to China many times and I must say that I hate the sound and sight of people spitting. As an earlier answer stated, they make a lot of noise as they seem to bring it up from way down. It is very common in China with both men and women spitting. Whether it is the polution in the cities that causes people to spit, I do not know as I have never spent much time in the country side to compare. One thing I do know, is that after two or more weeks in the city, you will want to spit too!!
The Chinese Government is trying to eradicate the spitting habbit in Beijing for the Olympics as they realise it is offensive to Westerners.

When I lived in Kong Kong in the 80s spitting and spitoons were everywhere.
I was told by a university lecturer that the reason the Chinese spit so much is because the early Christian Missionaries told them to spit to get rid of germs!
Of course, we now realise that is just spreading germs - but the habit persists but is gradually being phased out by government info campaigns and improved hygeine knowledge.

I was in the hospital once for several days when I first came to China and there was spitting even there, I think it has become les and less over the years

I know it's disgusting but you need to know that everyone spits..
It is shocking...but I'm sure you spit or have spatted before
even gerorge bush was caught spitting
as long as you are human you spit..but I must say that as a chinese...I am quite shocked at it..maybe you should write a letter of concern to all the major city head health departments

I am not sure. It takes time to teach personal hygen. When I was in Fujian, I saw not only spitting, but kids urinated against wall....

Yes they spit a lot and I hate it so much, But try to understand don't you ever see hollywood cowboys movies? I noticed they spit too (especially the bad guys), Try to imagine that China right now is similar to the west that time of period.

I have seen this terrible habit bad with Samoans, in Anchorage Ak.
Nothing against them, just worked with 20-30 and they did it everywhere, break room, lunch room, outside smoking area. Male and female.
I have been wanting to ask about this. Is it cultural or defiance?

It's better to spit it than swallowing it, isn't it?
I don't think Chinese spit more than other races, but because they make so much noise with their throat before spitting, it attracts more attention than when we do it...

I hear that Beijing is cracking down on the behavior as the Olympics get closer. Still, such a big city...I bet it's hard to enforce the prohibition.
