Are atheists religious? No, of course not. But can they be spiritual? Absolutely! How many Buddhist atheists are there out there?? Lots! Spirituality does not depend on believing in a god. And just because we aren't religious doesn't mean we can't be interested in religion. I like how you just automatically lump every atheist on this site into the "troll" category because they don't happen to agree with you. If you look at the guidelines, you'll see the definition of a troll and that definition isn't "atheist". It seems to me that you're the one trolling tonight.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but religion/faith and spirituality aren't a package deal all the time. One can be spiritual without following a religion.
Just because I don't partake in any religion does not mean I've forfeited my right to explore and learn. Believe it or not, an atheist can have an interest in world relgion. *GASP*
And really, who's the troll here? The one asking a question that will clearly piss off a lot of people, or the one who's pointing out that people are entitled to think outside of the box?

I must say this is quite the interesting forum. I don't claim any religion or atheism, I tend to believe a combination of the 2. I believe in spirituality, just not necessarily that Jesus is my saviour, etc...
With all of the science today, I find it more and more difficult not to believe in the evolutionary component. And I find it more difficult to blindly believe in Jesus and the Christian faith. My daughter is an Anthropology major, and we have many discussions on this subject. But I still find myself praying to God, and thanking God, I believe there are miracles, and that things happen for a reason. Whether it is truly God's plan or just simply Karma, is the question. For all we know the whole universe could simply be someone's very active imagination, and we are the pawns, so to speak.
Would a just, and kind God, let children die in Iraq? from cancer?, starve to death? be molested tortured, and murdered? It is these atrocities in our lives that make me question religion. That is why I tend to believe more in the what comes around, goes around kind of philosophy. If you do bad things, bad things will eventually happen to you. But then again, I always try to be a good person, have a good heart, help those in need, and not be judgemental, and yet bad things still happen.
So to answer your question. It isn't necessary to be religious, to be interested in R & S on Yahoo answers. I simply find it interesting, to see all of the viewpoints. I form my own opinions and always have. I feel like I am a good person, and when I do die, I will not be sent to hell.

LOL you're so original (yeah right), how are atheists trolling? Where in any fine print does it say open only to religion? Those that have a problem with atheists in these part of the forums might as well file a complaint (silly me give ideas then again the report button is more their thing anyway). Judging by the whining and hate thrown at atheists you just keep on attracting us here (silly you guys huh) there are the cries of "how can you not believe in god", trying to impress others by saying without god or with the rise of atheism there are more bad things blah blah. Posts like these has me believing even more some christians aren't tolerant of others like they pretend to be. Want a forum strictly for religions or just christians make your own and display your true colors there or deal with people here who don't believe in what you do and get over your freaking selves. Way to prove your god is love and perfect then we will see more what if crap... Your god is hate and you and the many other christians like you prove it A LOT.

Do you think cats ask the question in Cats or troll Dogs? The is a place for matters regarding religion and spirituality, not a private club for the religious and spiritual.

I really hate to be negative however I think that my opinion on your analogy should be considered. (that was the worst analogy I've ever had the displeasure of reading.) Now let's get down to the nitty gritty mmmkaaaaaaiii?
No we aren't religious, we're sane. sue us.
I guess you didn't get the memo from whoever taught you the English language. (Many words in English have more than one meaning. Don't go on some tangent about spirituality when you don't know how to separate your idea of spirit(uality) from the rest of the educated world.
Here are some definitions of spirituality that **GASP** don't have a damn thing to do with god, jesus, Dionysus, Thor, etc...
Spirituality:
1. conscious, incorporeal being, as opposed to matter
2. an attitude or principle that inspires, animates, or pervades thought, feeling, or action:
3. The part of a human associated with the mind, will, and feelings
Your argument is weak.
According to just those definitions I would like to direct your attention to number three and say it OVER and OVER and OVER again.
According to that I'd say that a handful of us atheists come here because this forum has a lot to do with the mind, will, and feelings.

Your analogy seems to suggest that those who do not believe do not understand. It seems far more likely, given the ridiculous level of inconsistency and absurdity in most religious texts, that those who do believe are the ones who do not understand.
And there are many spiritual traditions that are atheistic or consider the existence of a deity irrelevant; Buddhism, Taoism, Vedanta, etc.

See? Smart talk and flippant "answers". It's impossible to reason with bullies and fools. They turn your question around and make some smart remark to show how clever they are. Epicurious has the definitive answer here - he wants to understand how anyone could be brainwashed into believing in something that's fake. That's his way of saying that believers are fools, but if you object to this you're a whiner with a victim complex.
I've come up with what is to me the perfect description of them - they are like bigotted, dumb jocks crashing a debate society. Ignorant and rude and proud of it. If we all ignored them, maybe they'd get bored and go away.

This is the area where people ask and answer questions about religion and spirituality. It does not restrict it to religious and/or spiritual users. If you think that it does, please post a link indicating this.

I'm glad I'm agnostic so I can avoid your rant.
Religious people are also insulting when they claim to have incontrovetible proof of god's existence and then trot out an ambiguous and internally inconsistent scripture written by nomadic goat herders.
A real god would (among other things) make his/her wishes known in unambiguous prose that no human could mistake and which wouldn't require a pantheon of religious scholars to try to decrypt. Or better yet, why not just appear to all of us, including mother theresa?
