I am an Iraqi living abroad.
I can see that you all are choosing to follow your media in ignoring the facts to give yourselves a fuzzy feeling about your troops being in Iraq for a good cause that will at least justify the hundreds of good soldiers getting killed along with the hundreds of thousands of good Iraqi's.
First fact: USA and its allies are OCCUPYING IRAQ and if justifications used to do that were true then how can you explain 10's of dictators brutally governing there people around the world with no one even shedding a light on what they do although this can be changed in most cases with less power and far less money?
Second fact: Have you ever heard of an under occupation independant government throughout history?
Bottom line because I have to go back to work is that it is rediculous to think that the current Iraqi government can make such a decision unless the US ask it do so...

The fledgling Iraqi government would collapse and the country would be in a state of civil war until some brutal dictator could manage to crush all opposition and install another tyrannical regime.

Yes. What would happen is the insurgent level would destroy the (infant) government in place.
The Iraqi military and government are not ready to be handled by their own. It is still to early.
A civil war would break out leaving the country in complete and utter chaos.

The conquered do not order the conquerors to do anything.
It may be a messed up way of looking at it, but it's been true throughout history from time in memorial.
In actuality, ...if they told us (or asked us) to leave, I think we should grant their wishes.

Yes I have. We would doff our caps, pack our gear and leave. Of course that would assume that the Iraqi govt had gone insane and actually believed itself capable of maintaining its sovereignty without our assistance at this point.
