I am a Computer operator our company has no job for us that is why maybe they put me to a clerical position, which is not my position. it is hard for me to take this but I think some of the employee is thinking layoff in the near future. So if I refuse to do this clerical work do they have a right to terminate me.

Sounds like you may be a perfect candidate for a government or union job. They tend to fit the criteria you are seeking. You may also want to think about this - Why not render the most excellent service you can, no matter what the job. Employers and sometimes other visiting the workplace notice you doing the best work. You may get a better offer form your current employer or perhaps from someone visiting your workplace. Employers are always looking for great workers. Be proactive. Focus on what great things you want to have happen. Wishing the best in your search for a position you enjoy.

Yes, and for a number of reasons.

1) most states in the US are right-to-work. That basically means an employer can terminate you for no reason at all.
2) job descriptions are a guide, not set in stone.
3) refusing to do work because it is not a part of your job description will ultimately lead to a bad review, which will be the basis for termination. Either way, you lose.

Go look for another job. Hopefully you won't get terminated before you find another one.

If the employer no longer has a position available as computer operator, they can offer you something else (such as a clerk) or lay you off. Which would you rather happen?
