This question reminds me of a excerpt from D. James Kennedys book The Gates Of Hell Shall Not Prevail where he is speaking of someone who made the statement..."Where have you been? Every War in the world is based on religion. There's no greater source of violence."(Comes from an episode of Picket Fences) D. James Kennedy states..."That's a distortion of history, as we documented in our previous book, What if Jesus had never been born? In reality, far more people have been killed in this century alone by the atheistic Communists than have been killed in all previous centuries combined ! The world waited until this century for the term "genocide" to be coined. As the eminent historian Paul Johnson points out, the totalitarian states of the twentieth century(all of which were atheistic and anti-Christian) have proved to be the greatest killers of all time." So if you are an atheist or an agnostic why would you want to be that? You made no good point.

You shouldn't.
Religion is total BUNK.
Jesus had not tolerance for religion.
Know who followed Jesus when he walked the earth?
The whores, drunks, gamblers and losers of that time.
It was the 'religious' folk that he shunned.
The witch trials and the inquisition were either a bunch of scared lost Catholics(no offense) that had NO clue how to live and go to heaven without complete 'works' or it was a ploy for power.
Either way it had Nothing to do with Jesus.

It was not the religion which comitted the acts, but people carrying out the acts and falsly wrapping themselves in Christianity to shield themselves from the wrath, and garner support from other people.

Had they lived their GOD given life, rather than their chosen life... those things would not have occurred.

So in this particular scenario, don't hate the game, hate the players. You're doing the same thing that people against guns do, by saying guns kill, rather than acknowledging the real facts that it is the people whom kill, and wrongly use the gun as their tool of personal resolution

More good has come out of Christianity over the centuries than bad. Yes, some people in the past who had an imperfect concept of what it means to follow Christ did some bad things, but that just shows that everyone's human. There are people like that in all religions, all times, and places. Why believe in a religion that says if you strap a vest full of bombs to yourself, then detonate it in a busy, crowded city bazaar, you will go to heaven???

BERT:

Excellent point. It's 100 percent true. More people have been killed in the twentieth century alone in the name of atheism and secularism, with moral relativism as the underpinnings. This is what happened as a result of a large portion of humanity turning it's back on God.

I believe that those happened a few centuries ago, and were done by man who used religion as a source of power. It was not condoned by God.

This analogy is like saying you need to leave the US because the country at one time condoned slavery and used questionable means to annex part of Mexico and imprisoned Japanese Americans during WWII. Our country has changed its ways, and so has Christianity.

True Christianity is about walking in love and in compassion to one another. Just read any of the books of John in the Bible, and you will understand what I'm talking about.

Because all those involved with inquisitions were Roman Catholics. And not all those involved with Christianity were into witch trials. Mathers wasn't into the trials and he was the judge! He didn't like being there. He thought it was stupid.

My "religion" didn't have the inquisition and witch trials.

That's Catholicism. Catholicism is NOT the only Christianity.

The inquisition, if you will read your history, was against other Christian's! Read Fox's Book of Martyrs where people broke off from the Catholic Church and were persecuted for it.

Christianity is not an organized religion. Man created organized religion! The deffinition of a Christian is someone who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ, who in turn told us to follow the teachings of God (the Father). Hence, those who murdered and tortured weren't very good "Christians" were they?

We believe in Jesus(God), not in religion. Just think about the people who believed in God and died for their beliefs, the faith is still alive today. However many leaders in the world died for their sayings and beliefs and they don't have any power today.

I have to wonder, where do some people come up with this stuff? What religion was that, and why do you care what religion I believe in?

you answered it "a religion" Try God Jesus and the bible, men made the inquisition and witch trials, not God or the bible, it's unscriptural...
and Jesus often scolded religious people for hurting the sinner instead of helping..
