Firstly only new vehicles are fitted with the digitach not old ones and there are more differences than just the shpe of the hole and manual/auto tachographs. I know for instance that Mercedes Actros trucks must use 100 rated tachos and most other vehicles use 125 rated, but which identifing features on the tachograph recorder state which disc rating to use?

Since digital tachographs have come into force, the old paper charts are being phased out. By the end of this year, all commercial vehicles will have digital tachos.

But, for historical purposes, there were two types of tachograph head: Lucas-Kienzle (with a pear-shaped centre) and Veeder-Root (which had a circular centre hole and two small 'orbit' holes). Make sure your charts fit the tacho head!

Apart from that, you need to ensure that:
The chart's maximum speed recording line, exceeds the maximum speed of your vehicle.
If the vehicle is limited to 90km/h (56mph), you should have a bold 90km/h line on the chart.
Make sure the chart is for an automatic tachograph, if that is what is fitted.

I assume you are asking this question out of general interest? Anyone who drives trucks for a living would not need to ask - if they did, they shouldn't be driving...

you use 1 tacho chart per day on 1 vehicle...if you have to drive another truck you use another tacho chart but carry on with the same hours.... ie. it doesnt mean you can drive 9 hours come into the yard and change trucks and start again. you will only have 1 hour left. (can only drive 2 ...10 hours per week ) rest are 9 hours.
mr truck driver me.
