Someone was telling me that Officers in the Army are not required to do basic combat training and instead do some other form of training. Is this true?

ROTC - no Basic Training
OCS - there are two types
1. Straight in with a college degree, they go through the same Basic Training that everyone goes through and then straight to OCS (they've changed the way OCS works even since I went through it two years ago, but this much is still true)
2. Been in for a while and going through OCS, obviously they've gone through Basic Training.

Short answer, Yes.

Not all officers go to basic training.

there are 4 ways that you can become an officer:

ROTC, OCS, Service Academy, or Direct Commission.

If you go to a service academy they do their own hazing thing over the summer that is supposed to be like basic training (just a note that a graduate of any academy can be commissioned in any service, but it is rare for them to switch but they can).

in ROTC 4 year Cadets did not need to do any basic training when I was in college from 97-01.
if you were a 3 or 2 year cadet they sent you to a watered down basic that you could quit at any time and be home the next day (because ROTC cadets that are not in the reserves are not in the military they can quit anytime). unless you were prior service then you were exempt (I never went to this because of the prior service thing)

There is also a direct commission I know much less about this type it is most often given to Doctors and lawyers and the like who will just show up day one as a CPT or MAJ depending on what some board decides. But I have met MPs who have been commissioned this way (he was prior service)

OCS guys all go to Basic training but they do not all go to AIT. Some go from basic to OCS others do 15 or so years as an NCO and then become officers.

Officer Basic Course is NOT basic training. Having been to both I feel quite safe in saying this. At one I lived in a open bay at the other I stayed in my own hotel type room with maid service and got weekends off. I'm sure you can figure out what is what. (I did get yelled at both times, but it's NOT the same).

Yes. They go through OBC (Officer Basic Course) as opposed to just normal basic. Some officers do both, those are the ones that are enlisted first and then go through OCS (Officer Candidate School) to become officers. They are basically like Basic training (which is all about learning to follow orders) save that they are geared for the officers' roles (which is all about learning how to give orders).

I attended a 4 year university and received my B.A. I then decided to become a police officer, and had to go back to college for a year. In MN, after completing LE school, you need to attend a "Skills class." Thats basically a really lame boot camp, that the student pays for. Larger departments have their own academies, such as one I attended last year. That 15 week academy was just like basic training, just watered down. I still had the "Yes sir, No sir" stuff, uniform inspections, PT, running, physical punishment, etc. If you have attended a military basic training the police academy will not be an issue.
