We got a 9 week old female black lab, this is our 5th day and I really want to change what we've been calling her for these 5 days. Can I? And what should we name her? I like Abby.

Yes you can . Its only been a few days since you've brought her home. And I think Abby is a great name.

Abby is awesome for a sweet, black lab, but it's not very original. I've been a groomer and a vet. tech for ten years and I like new and unique names. That's just me, but I could name at least 20 or 30 labs called Abby.
It's never too late. WAIT until you know for sure. Check out her personality and see what clicks. She may remind you of a famous author or actress or maybe even someone from a cartoon or something... whatever. If you can't sleep at night try going through the alphabet with different ideas for a name that will suit HER. I could give you a list, but it would be long. Email me if you want or try my 360 page. I have a zillion cool names for female dogs. I HAVE a female Boxer called Nadia but everyone calls her "Notnot.' It totally suits her. Don't rush into a name until you're absolutely sure it will be fit for you and the dog.

I took in a rescue that was being neglected and abused, she had an ugly name that seemed more for a boy than a girl.....she was about 1yr. old.
I gave her a new pretty name and just made sure I used a happy and friendly voice when calling her and also used the new name a lot more than necessary, like instead of saying "good dog or good girl I'd say good and her new name. She caught on very quickly! Abby is a very nice name and if she's your dog you should get to name her.

I just renamed a 9 and a half month pup I was fostering and the new name is something not even remotely similar sounding to what she was called before.
Her old name - Naudia
Her new name- Butterfly
I didn't mind her old name, but it had ties to her past where she was abused, I wanted to give her a new life.
It took her a couple days to get it, but she got it.
Dogs can really be successfully renamed at any age. Though the older the dog, the longer it may take to learn it's new name.
9 weeks is such a little baby still you should have no problems with this at all!

Of course irt is NOT too late!
Dogs are very smart -- just start callingher by her NEW name as soon as you can, so she can learn it!
: )

Abby is a GREAT doggie name!!
Love it!

Also.... Unique Dog Names:
Bon Bon: I can see this as a good name for a small black dog.

Caviar: For a dog with expensive tastes. Maybe a good Poodle name?

Jalapeno: A good name for a dog with a sometimes fiery disposition.

Crouton: Another good name for a small breed. Maybe a Chihuahua?

Latte: Possibly a good name for a black dog.

Kahlua: I can see this name on a brown dog.

I think Abby is a great name for a girl dog and I don't think it's too late. We have been calling my puppy, several different name since he got here, his name is Dutch, that's what my son and I calls him, his nicknames are dog boy or munchkin dog since he's so small, my husband made them up. I think he answers to all of them

Yes you can change the dog's name. My son recently rescued a nice rat terrier from the animal shelter. He and his family named her Rosy. She is approximately seven years old. When my son was taking Rosy for a walk in the park, the previous owner recognized her. The previous owner said her name was Lizzy. They had to give her up because they had three other dogs, a varying breeds. Anyway, Lizzy responds to the name Rosy, even though she had been Lizzy for years.

Hi, I work with Petrescue in Australia.
We rescue dogs from the pounds and those who are badly treated by their owners etc. Some dont even have names!
A dog will respond and adapt very well.
I have a jack russell cross at the moment who only after a few days is responding to her new name "Tammy".
You shouldnt have any trouble, especially as this is only a puppy. They pick things up quickly, and labradors are very intelligent dogs.

It's not too late. Whenever you say the new name, give her a treat when she looks at you. A neighbor gave me a dog his brother in law didn't want. His name was Pudgy, but that doesn't work for a underweight dog. I changed his name to Max using the above method.

Sure you can change her name. Abby is a great one. My black lab's name is Cody and his mom's name is Abby! She'll learn her new name in no time at all.
