Between 1/2 and 1.5 cups of dry puppy food per day until the dog is about 2 years old. You should always feed dogs under 2 years old PUPPY food, because it's got more protein and nutrients that they'll need to grow. Adding a little canned food is okay for a few weeks until he gets used to the dry food, but try to limit canned food as much as possible, because it leads to plaque and tartar buildup on their teeth.
Split the food up into 2 or 3 meals during the day.

I have 2 Chihuahuas and I also free feed my babies. They are so small, and they tend to eat a little amount many times through out the day. I would also make sure you have them on a good quality food. I use Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul. You could also try Merricks, Wellness, Natures Choice, & a few others. You can not buy a good quality dog food at a grocery store. You need to go to a pet supply store, and ask them about high quality dog foods. They cost a little more, but with a Chihuahua the smallest bag should last awhile. Also make sure your pup gets all shots and regular vet visits, because dogs as small as them can get deathly ill in a short period of time. They do not have as many reserves as most bigger dogs. Also make sure he is properly trained and socialized to make him the fun and lovable dog that all Chihuahuas can be. I bet he is a beautifull baby and congratulations.

All dogs have different needs.
Make sure your pup is eating at least 3-4 meals a day. Small breeds are prone to drops in blood sugar if they don't eat enough throughout the day.
Start with the guideline on the back of the bag. Divide that amount into 3-4 meals. You may need to feed more or less.
If your dog has a visible "waist" when viewed from above and you can easily feel its ribs under a thin layer of fat, she's at a good weight.
If your dog doesn't have a visible 'waist' when viewed from above and you have a hard time feeling her ribs, cut back a little.
If your dog is under weight, feed little more.

I free fed my Petey till she was about 5 months old.. Now I feed her 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups a day, I break it down into 3 feedings, her food is all homemade, as she would NOT eat dog food. She gets a vitiam once a day. It must agree with her as she is now 9 years old and never been to the vet except for shots and grooming..

I raise chihuahuas and I always stress how important it is for chi pups to be free fed. Kibble should be out for them all day. Low blood sugar is a real risk, specially with tiny ones. Congrats on your new baby!! Enjoy!!
