NO. in order to join any active duty Branch of the military you MUST GIVE UP FULL CUSTODY. you may NOT get custody back before the end of your first term of enlistment, at least 4 years.

the AF Reserves, however, will allow you to enlist without giving up custody.

Ok people since when can we not read it says "DONT want to sign over my rights to my parents for my son"....I'm an Army wife, however in my husbands unit there are several people who are single with kids..day care during the day, and during deployments with the other parent or with family, however a few years ago my husband was a recruiter and they weren't allowed to except single parents...so I'm not all that sure on that..talk to your recruiter and see if he has any ideas for you on how to go about it..and see what would be the best route...and I praise you for trying to make a life for you and your son..if and when you do join hopefully you dont have to sign over anything for your son..and you can keep him til if and when you get deployed and your parents can watch him while you are away...just make sure you give your parents Power Of Attorney when you leave..you can give it to them for just insurance things etc that you know your son might need while away!! Anything else just email me its on my profile..Best of Luck

Go talk to the legal department and ask them what you can do. Someone has to take care of your kid, so they just get like a temporary thing if you're deployed. I don't understand why you'd have to give up your rights. You just put the kid in daycare during the work day.

You can give up as much of your parental rights as you choose ( and your parents agree to while taking temporary or full custody of your child).
