Well it depends. Toilet paper widths sometimes vary by country and by texture as well. So the optimal number may vary. Although I was shown how once could "do the job" with one square.

4 is good. This depends on the exit of course, whether its liquidy, tarry, smooth, or a combination. Sometimes you just spin like the wheel of fortune. Also if it is single ply, go with 8.
