My husband may be taking a trip over there for work that may last a few months. I was wondering what the difference would be for groceries bills etc. compared to average prices from Ohio.

In most cases the business that is sending him here would cover a great deal of his costs and his salary would all be gravy, food is cheap, eating in local places, even some of the fast food place (Micky D's) are cheaper than in the USA, so, even in a big city like Shanghai the cost of living in cheaper than Ohio

It will definitely be cheaper to live in China. First of all is the favorable exchange rate. He can probably get a combo meal at McDonald's there for about $2 and that much money is not considered as cheap as fast food is considered here in the US. Also, your husband most likely will be making US$ while he's living there so that's more than a typical urban Chinese person's salary (which I'd estimate to being below $1000 per month). So he's pretty well-off compared to the average middle class Chinese. And clothes and groceries there are equivalent or below US costs after currency conversion.

Altho, one thing is where he's going. If he's going to Hong Kong then it's higher than most other places in China but should be comparable to a big US city. Shangha and Beijing are also not as cheap from what I've seen and heard but it should still be below or comparable to the cost of living in most big US cities.

If an American wanted to live like to local Chinese, cost of living is lower in China. You can have a plate of rice, some meat and some vegetable plus a can of Coke, cost you USD0.5 in some shops in big city like Guangzhou. But if you want to be sure about what you eat, are they clean, not cooked by thousand-year-oil, etc, it can be expensive. A buffet lunch in five-star hotel in Shenzhen cost more than a much better buffet lunch in Las Vegas 5-star hotel.

If you go to supermarket, most of the food, drinks and diary product are from China, so cost is lower, if you insisted in buying imported food, then it is expensive.
