You can be a vegetarian in Basic Training. You get to select your meal from the cafeteria line. (be sure and do it at the proper volume and proper tone of voice)
As far as contracts, if you join to be an officer, you won't sign an enlistment contract. That would make you enlisted. There's a different agreement involved. You have to be selected by a board and on completing OCS you will receive a commission. On the rare event you can't complete OCS, you will have some options, which I don't even know about, so I can't tell you.
There is a process to resigning a commission, but they don't make it easy or fun. On the other hand, you can't resign your enlistment contract. You have to get hurt or do something stupid to get kicked out.
After your three years active (unless you join the reserves, in which case you'll be activated soon enough anyway) you can go for the additional 5 years in the reserves or stay active. Either way, they've got you for a total commitment of eight years, just like the enlisted folks.

Good move. In general you will be able to do as you wish in the military. The Military is an anarchy organization in which the CO is basically the ruler. You will be able to be a vegetarian if you like in training. You will also network yourself with many great people which will be of help to you long after you have left the military to pursue other things. No other organization in the world can say that. GOOD LUCK and this retiree salutes you.

I would say go to college first. Your parents made substantial sacrifices to get you in a position to go to college WITHOUT having to do the military. Pursue a degree path that interests you and learn as much as you can about the world, and not become too cynical (as this is not a sign of intelligence, but a sign of a quiter). Then, and only then, determine for yourself if you want to go into the Military. If you do, please please please please go Officer. I would suggest becoming a member of the Few, the Proud...but I say that simply cause I am biased. I loved the experiences I had in the military and am the driven, competitive person I am today because of what I learned in the Corps. I would say that if you don't have a clear plan for what you want out of the military (job experience in a specific field, etc, ) than wait til after college. I have met people who traveled Europe after College and I have met people that joined the military after College. Of those that went to Europe, they see where their peers are who went into the Military, and they wished they could go back and made a decision change. Of those that passed on Europe, they don't regret their decision. Good luck with your decision. I hope I helped in some capacity.

I think serving your country after graduation is an honorable thing. A contract is a contract......
Ask a recruiter about the vegetarian aspect of military life. I think you are offered a variety of food at the mess halls, just pass on the meat items.

They keep their word because it is a legally binding contract. Yes it is possible to be a vege. in basic but it won't leave you many choices. Of course I was in the Air Force so it might be different in a different branch.

You may not want to join the military - I say this based on the questions you ask. If you have to ask that many and those questions..it is just not for you...Nothing wrong with it..but it is the way it is.

I think you should find some other type of employment, because:
1. You will get screwed, literally and figuratively.
2. You will eat worms, live beetles, and all sorts of other things in basic and other macho-driven periods.
It's the military, fer chrissakes, not a freakin' tea party!
