"Proof-texting" is when people try to make various verses in the Bible mean what they want them to mean and ignore the context of the paragraph, book or even the Bible as a whole.
People even ignore the meaning of the words translated into plain English in order to distort what the Bible actually says.

“proof-texting" is where a person finds a certain word like sanctuary in Dan. 8:14, the same word in Lev. 16, the same word in Heb. 7, 8, 9” and holds “that they are all talking about the same thing.”

This premise is weakened by two main problems—language and context.

Taking a passage of Scripture out of context, and assigning a meaning to it not supported by the context.

Luke 21:17 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.

Therefore, all men, including other Christians, will hate you.

The women are gonna love you though....

In my opinion it would mean using certain verses of the bible /to support a point of contention. They could also use one verse to prove the veracity of another.

In the case of most Protestant Christians - it means taking a verse out of the context of the total work of Scripture, and out of the Tradition of the Church who GAVE us the Bible in the first place....and using that one verse to "prove" some theological point.

Like saying "You must be born again" without looking at the context in shich Jesus is teaching about HOW that is done (by water and the spirit) - i.e., Holy Baptism.
