John 20:31 cites the purpose as follows: "but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." John was not only seeking to strengthen the faith of second-generation believers as well as bring about faith in others but also sought to correct a false teaching that was spreading. John emphasized Jesus Christ as "the Son of God," fully God and fully man, contrary to that false doctrine which saw the "Christ-spirit" as coming upon the human, Jesus, at His baptism and leaving him at the crucifixion.

Wouldn't you?
If you were capable of communicating through writing about some experience you had that was wondrous to you - wouldn't YOU write about it?
Sheesh! Just look at the things that are merely "cute" or "funny" that we take the time to write about and forward by e-mail to friends!
Many person's experiences were memorialized in writing... the question should not be - "WHY was the Gospel of John written? ...But why was it one of the four Gospels CHOSEN?
MATTHEW - was chosen for its intended audience: The Jews. It best represented the connection to the writings the Jewish people were already taught. It made the best wittnessing tool to them.
MARK - was chosen for its intended audience: Men of Action - the Romans. It is a concise wittness that gets right to hte heart of things.
LUKE - was chosen for it's intended audience: The Gentiles. It explained WHY the coming of Christ was important and why ALL peoples needed to accept Him.
JOHN - was chosen for it's intended audience: The Christians. John was one of Jesus' inner circle. His precious recollections draw those of us who have come to Christ - even closer in relationship to Him. We are able to through these precious words - like John - lay our head on the breast of Christ and revel in His love.
Remember what Christ said - if all had been silent, the very rocks would cry out! (Luke 19:40)
How could John have EVER chosen to remain silent??
Peace.

John himself answers this question in chapter 20, verse 31: But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing, you may have life in his name.
John wanted people to know the Deity of Jesus, which is why he starts his gospel out with an affirmation of this... In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

This will be a hard choice between Jim and Kait both have the right answer. It was written so we would know Jesus the way John knew Him,as Savior and Friend.John had an intimate knowledge of who Jesus is and was or that should be yesterday, today and for ever.

The good news according to John gives us a close up view of this annointed son of God in word and action. This gospel makes known the intimate love between father(Jehovah) and son(Jesus Christ)
