This was about traffic control, not dissing Marines. If you watch the footage the Marines shot on 9/11, you can see they're doing gun twirls, stabs, formation marching. I'm sorry,
but the sort of thing would bring traffic to a stop. It's just too damn cool to drive past it without watching.
You can read (see link in sources below) what the Golden Gate Board the commercial. The key points are:
"Ms. Kupersmith provided a brief report on a recent situation regarding the filming of a commercial by the U.S. Marine Corps on the Golden Gate Bridge. She stated that inaccurate facts about the situation were presented by radio personality Michael Savage on his web site and radio show as to why and how the filming permit was denied. Ms. Kupersmith explained that the U.S. Marines requested to film the commercial during a weekday time that would have significantly impacted traffic flow and traffic safety. Consistent with District practice, they were offered an alternative weekend when traffic impacts would be minimal.
They chose not to film at the alternative time offered.
Ms. Kupersmith further stated that Mary Currie worked with the location manager for the U.S. Marine Corps’ production company to find two alternate locations: one at Kirby Cove and one at Battery Spencer, both in the GGNRA Marin Headlands, and the commercial was successfully filmed on September 11th, with the Golden Gate Bridge displayed prominently in the commercial."
Previously, the same bridge supervisor, Mary Currie, had a bunch of anti-war protesters arrested on the bridge when they exceeded their 2:00 pm finish time. She again denied
anti-war protesters access to the bridge earlier this year in an incident that resulted in injuries to a reporter...from the same local ABC station that is now hawking the "SF hates marines" story. http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=local&id=4900158
To those who say, well then, why does the city allow Critical Mass...it doesn't. Critical mass has no organized leadership and never applies for permits. The city tried arresting them, starting in 1997, but it only made the traffic headaches worse and that policy was abandoned.
Oh, and the commercial production company basically says it was a scheduling issue. They'd gotten a permit for the 9th, but then the Marines came on the 11th. That and the director didn't choose the locations far enough in advance to get ok's from residents who would be inconvenienced (see the usatoday blog below)

When the city has had other commercials filmed in the street before, when scenes from movies were filmed before, after they kicked the ROTC out of their schools, after they banned the USS Iowa, and after they banned the Navy Blue Angels I do not believe city officials when they say they are concerned about traffic disruption. If they are indeed worried about traffic then there had better NEVER be another commercial or film shot there because if it is they will instantly be known as liars.

They hate the Marines in San Francisco. But the Marines should not take it too hard. They hate the army, navy and air force too.
Just wait until after the next, big earthquake when they need to be rescued. They'll discover they loved all of them after all.

I was (regrettably) stationed (twice) in the bay area. The people there are extremely hostile towards anything or one that closely resembles authority -- especially military. While the city itself has some REALLY beautiful architecture, it is absolutely a den of inequity and perversion.
The military has closed all bases in the bay area. The people there have had to find other forms of prostitution (employment) other than feeding off the government gravey train.

San Francisco hates the military in general. They were glad to see then leave after near by military facilities were closed back in the 90s' during base closures.

Pelosi had nothing to do with it it was the city.
And the reason was the time and location that the marines want to do the shoot would horrible disturb traffic. It had nothing to do with being anti Marine, it was a logistical issue, which some people want to inflate into more.
