I heard yesterday in England that owners of a 150lb beagle were fined thousands of dollars for animal cruelty because they let their dog get so fat. Is this a good idea? Should we do that here? I think so.

yes, they should be fined
and since so many of you asked, parents should be held responsible if their children get fat. does everyone understand how unhealthy being overweight is?
I had to scoff the other day when i overheard some 250 lb woman telling someone that smoking was bad for them and going to kill them. all i thought about was how the three whoppers she ate for lunch wasn't much better for her.
Obesity is a problem people. A human problem. We are not only happy killing ourselves but we are killing our animals too. Dogs aren't fat in the wild. Having a fat dog that can't walk is no different than any other kind of abuse.

Depends what the owners were doing that let the dog get fat.
There's not much details here so I don't know the answer to the question-Other than to say if they were cruel to teh dog, they should be fined.
Like, feeding a dog a lot of chocolate knowing it's poison to them-would be cruelty.
Knowing your dog is unhealthy and overweight to the extreme and never taking the dog to a vet or keeping them on a diet of dog food is cruelty-It should be fined.
In cases where dogs are just naturally fat due to no reasons of the owners neglect or abuse, then it should not.

My male has been neutered since we got him at 14 weeks of age and he has never been fat in his life. In fact, we sometimes have a problem keeping weight on him because he is so active. My friend's dog, who has been neutered since before she got him at 5 months, is also very slim and not at all overweight. Many dogs do get fat after neutering. Removing the sex hormones does have an effect on a dog's metabolism (how they burn energy). Even so, obesity is a result of taking in more calories than are used. It is up to the dog's owner to be responsible and not overfeed their dog. Look on the bag of dog food and read their feeding guidelines. Actually measure the amount of food you are feeding, don't just dump some unknown amount of food in the bowl everytime it's empty. Feel your dog on a weekly basis...you should be able to feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat without having to really push to feel them. As long as you keep an eye on your dog's weight, measure the amount of food you're giving him (ie don't overfeed him), don't go overboard on the treats, and give him regular exercise you shouldn't have to worry about him getting fat. This holds true for both intact and altered dogs!

No.

Fining owners doesn't solve the problem. Dogs that are grossly obese with no medical excuse should be confiscated, put in approved foster care until they are able to lose the weight and regain proper body tone, and then they should be rehomed. The owners should be legally banned from owning any pets in the future. Allowing a dog to be that obese is animal cruelty, and should be treated no different than if they had physically abused the dog.

the reason those people were fined was because a beagle should never weigh that much a beagle should weight no more than 25 pounds. i am suprised that dog isnt dead. that person go fined because that is animal cruelty. but a person shouldnt get fined because their dog is one or two pounds overweight. do doctors scold humans who arent the perfect weight. no. so dogs that r a few pounds overweight arent in serious danger. however that beagle obviously was

It can be a great way to stop letting dogs get fat. But on the other hand, some dogs can't help it, they arn't as active and don't have the strength to be active. So, i would say yes. It is the owner's fault for letting their dog get too fat and die because of health problems. It is a great idea for some people, but not all.

What about people who starve their dogs. They get a slap on the hand!! I would think that a beagle mixed with a mastiff might weigh 150lbs. If it is not mixed then I am sure that the dog has major health problems!!

Pounds sterling, not dollars.

If they fined bad dog owners, they'd have to start fining bad parents for their fat misbehaved children.
But I recall a family being fined £3000 because they didn't take their German Shep. to the vets when he had dysplacia.

£3000.. could buy a Birkin bag with that.. tsk.

Oh god, 150 pounds? Damn, I thought Judge was overweight when he was adopted, he weighed 32... now he weighs 32 again, but in muscle, so it doesn't matter. That extreme obesity should definitely have a fine. But wouldn't that be the same as all those people who have obese three and four year olds?
