As long as they keep their upper body & head warm, they'll be fine without socks, in sandals, or even barefoot completely. I used to be a real chilly-willy and when I started to go barefoot I thought it would be a summer-only thing too, I started barefooting in spring. But then I liked it so much that come fall, I read up about it and got a lot of helpful hints about how to go barefoot in cooler weather, and even in snow. Surprise: it worked, my feet are fine and I am fine, much better than I used to be in fact.

My coldest, painful and numb toes I had when I wore boots. The rubber riding boots were the worst of all, I've felt like I just had a bunch of little pebbles in my boots instead of toes soooo often, and sharp pains when I warmed up again. I've not had more than slight, brief cold feeling barefoot, even in the snow.

And I'm also much healthier overall; I used to be sickly from early fall until late spring, but since going barefoot I've only called in sick once (for two days) and even a minor cough is rare.

This is a pretty long post already, so I'll provide a link to a previous post where I described in more detail how I keep myself warm for winter barefooting.

Well i don't think socks have anything to do with their feet being in good shape. My kids run around the house barefoot all the time - we all do. And in AZ, where we're from, it's warm all the time so that's not a problem in the winter.

I do always make them wear socks in their sneakers though - they sweat like their dad.

There shoes are probably stinky! Also the socks keep them extra warm & dry when walking through snow. Athletes foot could develop since it would be a breathing ground for germs (walking out side then putting the dirt from their feet on the shoe, then sweating) The only time I think no socks in winter woud be okay is if your daughter was wearing flats. Otherwise I would make them wear socks to keep them safe from frost bite and athletes foot.

Do you live somewhere that gets a lot of snow and cold weather..? This seems ridiculous to me..in Fall or Winter, do you like running around without socks on..? Or do your feet feel..I don't know..drafty and cold..? Kids are going to do whatever you let them get away with because they are kids, as a parent it is your job to make sure they are dressed warm enough for weather conditions..it's not an issue of "oh there shoes are going to stink"..it's an issue of warmth and making sure your kids are properly dressed for the weather. If it's not Summer, i'd put the socks on.

We live in snow country so that is not an option in the fall and winter. At home we are all barefoot at much as possible, I hate shoes!! And as soon as it is remotely warm off the socks come.

my kids are not in school yet and during winter time i keep socks on them here so they do not get sick but summer time they are never in socks and pretty much wear sandals everyday due to the heat.
