I'm just slightly younger than you and I do NOT remember bible study in public schools. And, as mentioned earlier, prayer in school is still permissable; students can pray whenever they chose.
Those who want their children to get religious instruction should look to a church for that.
As for the world going to hell, no, I don't think it has. This time is no worse than many others and, in fact, is in many ways better.

I remember, prayer and pledge of allegiance in grade school, but I don't recall bible study in public school, and I'm close to your age. I do recall attending vacation bible school (BBS) every summer and that was affiliated with a church.
Yes, I will indicate that this country has gone to hell since.
In my old neighborhood you where either a catholic or a hallelujah (Baptist or Protestant). Our parents and grandparents planted the seed on us about the knowledge and the words of God and Jesus Christ; so when we repeated "Our Father" (prayer) and the pledge of allegiance or even sang "God Bless America" every morning, we felt safe in our environment.
Being the youngest of 8, my parents lived and raised all of us in the same house for 53 yrs and never locked our front door.
Now a days we are a double lock, surveillance, alarm protection, it's the sign of the times. Nobody feels safe in their environment or trust nobody, ANYMORE. Crime has risen and the most gruesome crimes unimaginable are going on more and more.
WHY? Because many of the young and their parents never heard or wanted God in their life's that they never learned "TO LIVE AND LET LIVE" and show respect to those that believed.
THERE IS TO MUCH HATRED IN THIS WORLD WITHOUT GOD.
PEOPLE DON'T RESPECT EACH OTHER, TOO MUCH JUDGMENT AMONG MANKIND, MONEY MONGERING (GREED), SELF RIGHTNESS, AND SO ON.
INFACT, we haven't improved as human beings in the world of the flesh, WE HAVE GOTTEN WORST.
But, I pray that ALL MANKIND will get to receive the seed of the Lord so it can grow and WE will ALL be in HARMONY and in SPIRIT WITH THE LORD. GOD BLESS! AMEN! SHALOM!

God and school do not belong together. Not everybody is christian. The world has improved in somethings and gotten worse in others. Bible study and prayer never made a person good if they didn't want to be. I think a big problem is parents not teaching their children respect and letting them get away with anything.

I think the world has gone to hell for a number of reasons. One of them being our movement away from God and following His word.
That being said, the movement towards materialism, which is a part of the turn from God, has created a society where women are working, and striving for more and more high power jobs, leaving our kids in the care of everyone under the sun, from teacher, to coaches, to themselves. We keep so busy, that many families don't even manager a couple dinners together a week, let alone every single day. Look at the divorce rate as well.
We have a society where more and more is tolerated, and placed under the "freedom of speech" or "human rights" cover. We allow inappropriate speech on TV, in front of our kids, clothes that barely cover anything, and words to songs that even many "liberals" cringe at.
If we as a society went back to some traditional values, Biblical values, and restored Godly order in our homes to start with, it would be a huge step in the right direction. I have seen it work in my own home since my husband and I were born again.
God Bless you.

My kid goes to school with pistol packing peers. No kidding, this is the third time it's happened this year at his school, kids with loaded guns that got caught before something happened thank God.
Bullies want to kill nowadays.
I grew up in the 70's and do not remember prayers nor bible studies in my schools but we did say "one nation under God" as they do nowadays. I hope this country never forgets God. God bless America!

I am 44. We did not pray or study the Bible in school. We had Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and church to teach us all of that. You would think that would cover it.

The further men get from God, the more they look upon sin as not sin. You can believe what you may, but this county, if it does not change it's ways, will be removed from off the face of this earth.
I believe you can tell what a society is like by their children. This nation, the United States of America has children killing children.
I believe children are a refection of society. And it fits since we murder so many unborn children.
