Obviously, theirs the 'breathing thing' as your ultimate criteria.
Yet, is a body devoid of emotions hold much value?
Sometimes having the necessities of food, shelter and light aren't enough to make us appreciate that we are alive.
This comes at your question a different way by asking
'How do I make myself feel more alive? '
Sometimes we feel like we must remind ourselves that we are alive.
Maria Schriver wrote in one of her books to try and do a couple things a week that you normally wouldn't or are afraid to do. She intended for this to keep the 'freshness' to your life. For her it was more a necessity that came with being a no-nonsense news reporter.

aware, responsible, compassionate, and approved by a medical doctor both after being born and ends upon a doctor saying you are "dead"
you must WANT to live and not just dread another day stuck in religion and gloom of a bad world and sin and no fun...

You don't need to go to any institution to be considered as living. You have a life - some people use it wisely and some don't.

I think a person has to be able to breathe independently. I think they must be conscious and able to make coherent decisions and be able to communicate in some form.

Life is a vulgarity, I can't define it, but I know it, when I see it.
I am amazed at the myopia of those who can see life on a microscope slide loaded with a sample of tree sap. But, when presented with a ferilized embryo, they see vugarity...
