Can anyone help me? We had to pull our children out of daycare. Our daycare provider was not happy, and before we left on the last day, she promised to mail us her SSN for tax purposes and $40 for a high chair that we bought and she broke. We waited a couple of weeks, never got anything from her. When I finally called her number her sister answered and said she moved to another state and didn't have her cell phone number, which, as close as they are I don't buy it. We paid her almost $5000 to watch our kids, and we want to be able to claim that on our taxes, but without her SSN, we can't, and it's basically like we paid her under the table, which we had absolutely NO intention of doing. We're in CA, if that helps. Is this fraud? I KNOW her sister knows how to get a hold of her, she is just unwilling to help. Should I go to the police? A lawyer? Anyone ever had anything like this happen to them?

And, we loved her and planned to use her forever, so thats why we didn't worry about her ssn. Us firing her was a fast decision, we didn't have time to get it and we trusted that she would mail it to us. I'm not looking for "it's your own fault", i'm looking for what can i do now. Come on ppl, we ALL know hindsight is 20/20.

Your tax preparer should be able to answer this question. My question is: why didn't you get her SSN when you hired her? You didn't do a background check on the person you trusted with the lives of your children?

You hired a low-life..........

I have worked for the police department before, and they won't do anything for you. They would refer you to a lawyer.
A lawyer may be able to track down a ssn number for you, and for sure help you out with your taxes. When you paid her, did you pay her by check? If so I would take your bank statements to a lawyer.

But first I would figure out your taxes for the year. See what kind of refund or tax deduction you would get for your 5 grand in daycare to make sure it is worth hiring a lawyer or cutting your losses.

If this woman could do this to you- I am glad that you fired her. Someone like this should not be near a child. Good for your and your best judgment.

Well, yeah, you know better next time. If you use the same tax guy every year, call him now, and see what you need to do. Or pay $50 to meet with a tax person (or accountant) who can advise you what to do. If it were me I think I'd try to search for info on the IRS website too.

I want to say that my work once sent out 1099's to a few people, and in the report to the IRS they marked that they didn't have the number - just the name/address. But I'm not for sure. Definitely look into it though. Good luck with it!
