Should dog shows be banned? They only look at conformation and not health. They also dont judge for performance of the dogs ability for what it was bred for! The best labs are the best water bird retrievers not how good its nose LOOKS! Likewise, the best small companion dogs should be judged on Health, friendliness and loyalty, not the perfect nose or ears for the breed! SHould the AKC and dog shows be banned? As far as I can tell they are ruining the breeds!

As far as the "best Labs"... that is YOUR opinion. The ones that I have seen that are the "field type" are HYPER and NOT what most people are looking for as a PET. Same with Goldens.
IF breeds are being ruined, and some are, it is the breed clubs and the people involved with them that are to blame. Dog shows are a useful tool for good breeders to evaluate their stock. Does it mean that every "show dog" be used for breeding?? NO!!! There are MANY other factors that go into that decision. That is why there are health clearances and working titles. Most breed clubs offer working titles and extra titles for dogs who hold both working and conformation titles. Some people just enjoy showing. I have placed tow pups that were shown to championship, and then altered. They were not dogs that I wanted for a breeding program, but the owners wanted to try their hand at showing and enjoy it. Now they can get working titles and other awards.
There is no reason that dog shows should be banned. You should find out a little more about showing and breeding in general before making that judgement.

You sure come up with some weird questions..

Conformation shows aren't for regular people basically, they are for breeders to have their dog judged against the standard.
But they are a fun thing for people to do with their dogs. .No different than agility or anything else.. It's a sport, it's a competition..

Breeders don't breed a dog based solely on whether a dog has a Championship or not.. That would be foolish.. A Champion that has bad hips isn't worthy of breeding.. A Champion that dies of cardio days after he gets his Ch.. isn't worthy of breeding.. No one would breed a dog just cause he has a Championship.. there are far more things to take into consideration than CH... Health, Temperament, Working ability.. You breed for the whole dog, not just one aspect.

Should show dogs be banned? Should people who do not show dogs be banned?
The AKC is not ruining breeds. Good breeders are not ruining the breeds. Back yard breeders and puppy mills are ruining the breeds. "Boutique" breeders are ruining the breeds. The AKC follows the standard for the special conformation, type, and attitude attributed to each breed. Remember, the individual breeds were created for various purposes by PEOPLE to perform certain tasks, and they breed for the personality and conformation that compliments and facilitates that job. Conformation showing is a celebration of that purity. Should show dogs be banned? BANNED? That is dangerous language, my dear, and as a resp[onsible owner, handler, and exhibitor, I personally take offense.

No, I don't think so. But I have heard that in other countries, you can not even enter a dog into a conformation show unless it has proven that it can do the original job it was meant to do. For my breed of choice, the Border Collie, that would be herding. I wouldn't mind seeing this adopted into the AKC as a requirement to show a dog. I agree that any dog in the show ring should at the very least, be able to do what it was originally bred for in the first place.

The up side to this is that the really good breeder do exactly this. They won't just show, but also work their dogs in the area that they were bred for.

I see nothing wrong with dog shows. I take my dog to pulling contest and agility contest. I know breeders that show thier dogs they never breed in blood line and pick dogs with the best health and form to breed. Why would they do otherwise that just a example of poor logic.

No.

Dog shows are only a PART of the breeding puzzle. They answer the question "Does it LOOK like the right breed?"

Other venues answer other questions.

For what its worth, some breed clubs are requiring pups nominated for Futurity events have parents that have been screened for health.

AKC has also sponsored shows for dogs with "working" "herding" and "hunting" titles. I was proud to be entered in one of these.

My personal preference is that a dog have titles on both ends of it's name.

IMO one of the things ruining the breeds are backyard breeders who breed without a clue about ANYTHING.

No. If the dog isn't properly conformed to do its job, it will break down and be useless at it at an early age, or it will be incapable of working at all. The standard is desigend to be a blueprint that guides you in "engineering", ie breeding, the dog that will be best capable of doing its job, at little to no wear to its own body. I can't help but wonder why you ask such inflammatory questions and are so obtuse to educated answers.

Excuse me??!! No!! Do you have any idea of what you are saying?!! There are more than just conformation, what about obedience, tracking, field trials, ect... There are many AKC show champions that are also titled in other events as well!! Dogs have standards for a reason! The show people and breeders ARE the ones that are doing more testing when it comes to genetics and health!! What you are saying supports the puppymillers and BYB'rs!!

Why? Does it really ruin your life in any way shape or form. There are many dogs that show that are healthy and look good. You really shouldn't say anything about this until you have all of the facts! I don't even show dogs, I never have. But banning them is stupid, its just one more stupid human comment.

No, they shouldn't

as usual you're trying to get a rise out of people

Added:
@ Bear: Actually the crap he's spouting is common among the animal rights idiots who believe that no dog should ever be owned or bred by humans....
And among byb/pm because they breed substandard dogs to start with and have never heard of the breed standard.

Added #2:
Those of us that have shown for years are full aware that the AR freaks would like nothing better than to force us to quit showing...they do this by coming to shows and turning our dogs loose, trying to poison...their sick theory is that we're "Cruel" and abusing the dogs, so the dogs are better off being free or dead so they won't have to be "enslaved" by humans...
Yeah, right...do ANY of these dogs look abused...
