In WWI soldiers and marines worn a chest mounted hand grenade bandoleer that had 11 individual hand grenade pockets, each one secured by a snap closure. This was still in used when WWII began but swiftly fell out of favor to its weight when fully loaded.

By 1944 a smaller three pocket leg mounted bandoleer that hung from the cartridge or pistol was introduced into service. Each pocket allowed for two hand grenades to be carried for a total of six hand grenades. Each pocket flap was secured by two post-in-hole type snaps and a single band tied around the wears leg to prevent boucing when in movement. This commonly referred to the M1943 grenade carrier.

The M1943 was replaced by the M1951 grenade carrier which was the same basic design as the M1943 except the pockets were now longer to permit three grenades in each pocket for a total of nine. These were used in Korea and some were still in use in Vietnam.

The M1956 ammunition case allowed for two hand grenades to be attached to either side of the case. Each soldier worn two of these cases allowing the bearer to carry four hand grenades. The grenade spoon handles slid into a slot on the each side of the case, a half inch canvas strap had to secure the grenade head and pull ring with a single snap closure. A great many people felt this to be a very unsafe carrying arrangement. As a result a secondary fuze safety latch was fitted to the hand grenades from the M26A1 on.

LC1 ammunition cases had a slightly improved arrangement where the hand grenades sat in half open pockets and were kept in place by half inch nylon strap with sinple snap closures. which this was consider a major improvement over the M1956 carry arrangement it was still considered to be unsafe. The LC2 Load Bearing Vest had to completely enclosed hand grenade pockets slightly above the belt line, the flaps for these individual grenade pockets were also secured by a snap closure.

The single carry fully enclosed grenade pocket is still in use today with the Mission Oriented Load carrying Light Infanty Equipment (M.O.L.L.I.E.) system except that each pocket can be position to location the wearer is most comfortable carrying it on his or her vest. Additional two carry and three carry pockets can be attached if that is so desired.

Some older soldiers who are fond of using hand grenades have been known to fashion an over the shoulder carry bag to carry a dozen or more hand grenades.
