Have you ever felt attacked for expressing a simple point of view?

Did 14 people give you a "BAD RATING" when you foolishly said "I like apples."

Do some people need to take a chill-pill instead of using those thumbs down like a machine gun?

I'm a little surprised by the hostile answer from §☺ĻĻŷ. I'm even more surprised that 3 people gave him thumbs up.

I wouldn't thumbs them down, unless my question was about getting over the fact that a bunch of apples killed my family, burned down my house, and cut off my legs.

Yes, I have felt attacked for politely expressing a simple point of view. Several months ago, someone in the Mythology section asked a question about flood myths. (They used Noah's Ark as an example, but I never mentioned Noah or his ark in my answer.) I answered, got best answer and thought that was the end of it. Two months later, some guy makes a replica of Noah's Ark and yahoo featured that Q&A on their homepage. Got some hate mail and about 80 comments that suggest I'm an idiot.

Yes, I have gotten thumbs down for the most benign answers, like 35 thumbs down on the answer I mentioned in the above example. (I got 38 thumbs up, so I guess it's not all bad.) I have also gotten thumbs down for foolishly saying "I like snow and rain." There was another person who said the same thing that didn't get a thumbs down. Then again, that person didn't have an orange target under her avatar.

Yes, yes! Some people really do need to take a chill-pill and quit abusing the thumb system!

Now, am I surprised at all of this? No, not really. People are pretty mean. They're even meaner when they can hide behind a computer screen.

*L* Aw, Gene. All my points of view are complicated.

I try not to stress over it, but yes, I've been called names for not being rabidly whatever the poster was (mostly confused, I believe). I got a thumbs down rating on a really obscure non-political answer, and I thought it was actually a pretty good answer. I got "best answer" out of the 9 provided, so it couldn't have been too bad.

I wonder if some people feel that if they give you a thumbs down, then others will automatically dismiss your answer and give theirs a better shot at earning extra points. I was reading in the Community guidelines section that one is not to put in space saver posts and then come back later and copy someone else's answer so that it appears they gave the "best" answer first. Why would they even have to tell us that if some people didn't just need to chill!

I have to confess that I once gave a thumbs down to a very good answer...total lack of hand-eye-coordination. I tried to correct it, but the system wouldn't let me. So figure it this way...It could just be me having a serious lack of attention to detail.

Yes it can be somewhat diminishing when you see the people disrespect others. I got violated because I wished everyone a happy fathers day, and because I said that I was spiritual and did not support organized religion.
When I ask questions, I like to hear people's points of view, and I truly think it is disrespectful of others to go around just giving thumbs down..but that will probably get me thumbs down...LOL
I think that people need to be more accepting, or at least tolerant of others views, and use respect even when their opinions differ.

Fabulous question Gene!! I like apples too. lol

I got attacked this morning - not by a thumbs down, but by a mean answerer.

In the wedding section, I asked whether anyone was tired of seeing certain questions over and over -- questions for which the answer never changes (e.g., "what ring do you wear your engagement ring on" and "do I have to write thank you notes?", etc. ) These questions literally get asked at least once a day -- like no one ever bothers to do a question search before posting. I jokingly moved for a 30-day moratorium on these questions. (I should also add that I added a PS note applauding the answerer who astutely pointed out that MY question was a repeat. Touche! I gave her the best answer award, too.)

I got a ridiculously harsh dressing down from some know it all who felt compelled to tell me that I took myself way too seriously, that I was trying to squelch freedom of speech, and that ALL of MY answers were probably a waste of space. Wow. Can we say "over-reaction?" Where is all this anger from?

True, a lot of people here are overly-sensitive. But a lot of people also don't take people's questions seriously and waste time with lame responses. Maybe too many underaged kids are using it, I don't know. Anyway, this is supposed to be a forum for an exchange of information, not debates or excuse for bashing people "anonymously" and whatnot.

Yeah everytime I ask a simple question I always get at least 1 or 2 rude, hostile, or perverted responses.

No, not surprised - due to the stupidity of many of the questions asked.

And, who gives a rat's clacker if they receive thumbs down ratings?

Not in the least. people tend to act a lot more aggressive when they are safely hidden behind anonymity.
