Like, before Barry hit 756 everyone had signs with asterisks, and now his home run ball has an asterisk on it.

Part of it is related to the allegations of his steroid / HGH/ whatever use, part of it is related to the home run record that Roger Maris held from 1961-1998.

As you may know Roger Maris hit 61 homers in 1961, which broke Babe Ruth's record of 60 homers in 1927. In 1961 the season was 162 games long and in 1927 it was 154.

At one point during the 1961 season, Ford Frick, the baseball commissioner at the time, suggested that if the record was broken, then it should be somehow designated, perhaps with an asterisk, that it was set in a season that was 8 games longer. It was a little like saying Maris broke the record, but he didn't really break it. Whether or not the asterisk should be there or not was a source of debate among baseball fans until Mark McGwire broke the record again in 1998.

When people talk about the asterisk as related to Bonds, they're saying that technically he broke the record, but he didn't really break it because of his alleged use of performance enhancing subtances.

The funny thing is, I don't think there ever actually was an asterisk next to Maris' record. It was just something that was suggested at the time, but I think the record books actually showed two different home run records, one for a 154 game season and a second for a 162 game season.

The people holding the asterisk signs were campaigning to have an asterisk placed next to the all time home run record that Bonds set passing Henry Aaron. The reason for this was that Bonds was (allegedly) using performance enhancing drugs.

The asterisk means that the record will be tainted because he took performance enhancing drugs so he could hit so many home runs. Early in his career he did not hit for power, he was way behind Aaron and McGwire* at the same times in their respected careers. Later in his career he bulked up due to these drugs and this enabled him to hit more home runs. Most people think this was not right. Hank Aaron did not even go to the games when Bonds had the chance to break the record because he knows he did not get the record fairly

The asterisk is because he allegedly used steroids. The popular opinion is that his name should have an asterisk next to it in the record books because of this. Basically what they are saying is Bonds has 756+ homeruns but he might have used steroids while Hank Aaron hit 755 but didn't.

It means very many people were hateful and envious of Barry Bonds for years before the steroid thing and now they have their chance to publicly crucify him, instead of doing something meaningful with their own lives.

In other words, Barry is a "sacrificial lamb". No offense to morons, but only their lot truly believes MLB was ignorant of steroid use in the mid-late 90's.

The asterisk means that they are marking the ball as one achieved by using steroids. EVEN THOUGH HE WAS NEVER FOUND GUILTY. INNOCENT TILL FREAKIN PROVEN GUILTY!!! People annoy me so much when all they do is feed off what other people say. Like it or not, he is one of the best baseball players in the history of the game.

Instead of the asterisk, they need to use an image of a steroid needle instead.

I think a better question would be:

Why do you have a Buffalo Sabres logo as your avatar, but your name is "Chris the Leafs Fan"?
