Dear fellow Brother,

I feel that the morality police in Palistine should be arresting criminals not innocent people because they are eating and drinking during Ramadan. This is a beatiful thing for the Muslim people. The morality police in Palistine seem to be a little confused about their jobs maybe they need someone or somebody to explain to them what their duties or as a morality policeman. The morality police in Palistine need direction and to understand what their positions are as morality policeman. They should be for justice and keeping the law in order not out of order.

These are morality police. It is a violation of Islamic Morals (etiquette) to eat in public while others are fasting during the month of Ramadan. They were arresting people in Algeria last year for eating INSIDE restaurants and they could have been traveling which means you don't need to fast. I think THAT is disgusting. They were INSIDE the restaurant. These people were eating out and about in the street. Something should have been done before people continuously see this year after year and start to emulate them.

It's called RESPECT.

ADDITION:

I could never say the phrase "I love my religion BUT"

I also think people are able to make an effort not to eat in public even if they need to and this is to you Terry G (the first part of my answer had nothing to do with you although I have a feeling you think it did because you seemed to have taken it personally with your addition). I am sure you could go INSIDE a restaurant and eat not out in the middle of the street and even then you can make it virtually unnoticeable. I have family that is diabetic they would be able to hide it if need be.

Should we be forced to have to see you eating in public? Or do we have true freedom of religion that protects us from being harassed by such things?

To the poster below me, you sound just like Terry - maybe she got another account again, maybe not.

They are arresting people for drinking IN PUBLIC. Yeah, they should be arresting people who are thieves etc but Islam is a system over all aspects of life. They have a law where you can not disrespect Islam and Ramadan etc. These people who are eating in public are doing just that. Plus, we are to hide our sins - God will be more merciful on us if we do because it shows we have shame.

"The duty of the morality police is to preserve public manners in public places, and to preserve the feelings of the people who are fasting," he said. "Violating the holiness of Ramadan is a violation of people's freedom. "

In Ramadan it is part of manners not to blatantly eat in front of others even if you are a woman on your period or have an illness. It is part of respect for other Muslims and your religion. So yes, you should be eating in private. I don't necessarily believe these people should be arrested but they should be fined at least. People will really start to learn the lesson though and you won't see many people doing this anymore. Thank God!

Even in countries where they don't arrest you people will publicly shame you -- even if you are a woman and they don't know if you are menstruating or if you have an illness.

Although choosing Islam may be one's choice, if they live in a place where Islam is the state religion or has control over the laws you are expected to follow them and in this case that would mean not eating in PUBLIC. They can't control what you do in your own home.

Personally, I think they are out of line and violating basics of Islam. In Islam, all people are free to make their own decisions and if they choose not to fast, that is between themselves and Allah. Also, many people cannot fast for health reasons (illness, women with their period, new mothers etc...) Should these people be forced to eat in hiding? I am Muslim and I will eat during Ramadan because it's absolutely necessary for my health. These people are fanatics and need to remember what Islam truly is about. They are embarrassing in their actions

Addition: Eating in public isn't necessarily flaunting it. I need to eat WHEN I need to eat. Ever hear of diabetic shock? I need to react IMMEDIATELY. I love my religion but I would prefer not to have seizures, go into a coma or die because I waited to eat in private. Exceptions are made for a reason.

Seeking4ever: Are you done yet? You seem to like to argue endlessly when you cannot understand someone's take on something. I am diatetic. I take 4 shots a day. I will eat when and as I need to. It's as simple as that. I HAVE discussed this with an Imam and it's acceptable to eat when and where I need to. I don't flash my food in front of people.

The wonders of Democracy.

The moment it it considered a need may be what is in question.

If these people had a legitimate reason for eating it would have come out in their arrests. They did not however have a legitimate reason, therefore the arrest was proper.

I agree with Terry, she has covered most aspects i would point out....thanks Terry! =D

Oh here we go, lets bicker amongst ourselves shall we. Islam does not permit one to put their life at stake when fasting. If you are lets say an insulin dependant diabetic, you would be required to take your medication accordingly. For a person who cannot fast, there are alternatives.

God says in the Qur’an: “Do not kill yourselves. God is compassionate to you.” (4: 29).

“Those who find fasting a strain too hard to bear may compensate for it by feeding a needy person.” (2: 184).

Savvy?
