It has been unlawful since 1934 (The National Firearms Act) for civilians to own machine guns without special permission from the U.S. Treasury Department. Machine guns are subject to a $200 tax every time their ownership changes from one federally registered owner to another, and each new weapon is subject to a manufacturing tax when it is made, and it must be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) in its National Firearms Registry.

To become a registered owner, a complete FBI background investigation is conducted, checking for any criminal history or tendencies toward violence, and an application must be submitted to the BATF including two sets of fingerprints, a recent photo, a sworn affidavit that transfer of the NFA firearm is of "reasonable necessity," and that sale to and possession of the weapon by the applicant "would be consistent with public safety." The application form also requires the signature of a chief law enforcement officer with jurisdiction in the applicant's residence.

I wouldn't anticipate getting approval from the ATf unless you own some private security firm with a very good reason for having it or are some gov't contractor working on US gov't projects and you have your own security. Those are the types of people who get approval. Your average citizen will not....
The average person also has zero need for a fully auto weapon. A semi-automatic rifle is enough for the average person. Fully auto wastes ammo and is ineffective unless very well trained. Even the military uses single shot and three round bursts.

Technically you can, but the state will probably not let you. You can get some older ones with a collectors license. Like somebody above me said, you'll have to get some really expensive permits that they probably have never given out in CA. You'd be better off moving to Nevada.

With a class three license from the ATFE and a few VERY expensive licenses, you can. The only problem is that you have to have a really, really good reason for buying one and also pass a VERY stringent background check to get the licenses.

NO, do not call a police department to get a true answer, call the NRA. They will most certainly have the correct answer. Also, ask them to supply you with the name of a lawyer in your jurisdiction that can tell you about local laws.

Signed, a liberal who supports 100% the right of a law abiding citizen to pack a gun. (machine guns, phukk, can't hit the broad side of a barn with one, almost useless except to mow people down.)

Who cares if it's legal!! The crooks will cut a person in half with one. I'd rather be prepared than stand in front of a Headstone asking why I wasn't able to protect my 6 year old.

Call a police department and ask. That is the only way you will get an answer that is absolutely true.
