Does any of this apply: http://www.fraud.org/tips/internet/fakecheck.htm

There are a lot of fake check scams. How did you come by this check?

You can report it to the organization in the link. But as long as you didn't try to deposit the check, your best bet is to just shred the check and forget about it. No sense bothering the local police department.

It's a scam. If you call the number, they will ask you to send them a small check for taxes, or administration fees, or some such nonsense, and then tell you to go ahead and deposit the check they sent you. Of course, their check will not be any good, and you've sent them perfectly good money. If you send them your money, you've been scammed! It's amazing how many people fall for this.
