Last year in school ( 1st grade) he was doing great with his reading AR tests he was ahead of most of the kids in the class with reading. Now this year( 2nd grade)all of the sudden he has failed every one of them. There are no sudden life changes at home or in his surrondings there is nothing that could be going on at home that i can think of that would be making his reading grades slip. He can read and likes to read but for some reason he is suddenly not remembering what he is reading? Any suggestions as to why and how we can help him to remember what he just read?

he may be an "auditory learner" meaning he retains information better when he actuall HEARS it. "Visual learners" can remember info from just reading it. One of my daughters was an auditory learner and had to have special permission to have someone read her test questions so she could understand them and answer them and we did a lot of outloud reading of assignments all through high school. Good Luck!

Has the teacher changed the reading level of the books? It could be that they are a bit more challenging than last year's, so your son has to try harder to work out what the words say, which means he is less likely to be able to properly take in the story he is reading.
When you look at a book with your son look at the front cover first, and get him to try to predict what the story will be about. Do the books still have pictures on each page? If so, on each page have him talk about what he thinks is happening before he reads the words. This will help him to assimilate the picture with the story, and understand what is going on.
Make sure you talk about the story a lot, and ask lots of questions. 'Why do you think that happened?' 'What did ..... say?' 'What do you think will happen next?' Try to sound as interested and excited as you can, so your son is interested in the book and wants to know about the story.

nicely my first question could be have you ever been with him to any of the tests? My niece' s college facilitates mom and dad to volunteer and help young ones via the tests(no longer their very own little ones of direction). Her mom and dad have the two complained different tests are too confusing and the concern point from three hundred and sixty 5 days to a minimum of three hundred and sixty 5 days would not make sense. in certainty the college is thinking removing them. My suggestion could be to study the e book with your son and ask him some questions after and a few interior the morning formerly college. You as a parent will know if he's having concern with retention or if it would desire to be the try questions (comprehension or tests in many circumstances)

He is either too tired when he is reading or not liking what he is reading. Does he read to you? Maybe you could do it like a game. You read , then he reads. It just might be too much going on around him also. If there are other children around, or the TV on, he isn't interested in what he is doing.

Try having him read to you and while he is reading stop him to ask him questions about what he just read. He may just be reading the words and not really the story. Good luck.

My daughter has the same problem but what I notice is that when I have her read it over and over again she remembers.

It sounds like he's bored and needs to read things that keep his attention.
