It's just a casual greeting ~ reply with your own friendly greeting, such as 'Great, how are things with you?' (or whatever you prefer) and let it go at that.
Like the more common 'How are you?' it is not actually meant to be taken very seriously and a big formal answer given, it's just a way to acknowledge someone and either move on or begin a conversation.
And because it's very casual, it gives both you and the other person the chance to say 'Great, gotta go' with any offence on either side. No need to feel awkward, whatever you say is fine, as long as it is either friendly or neutral, depending on the person who is greeting you and how you feel about them.
Best wishes :-)

My normal reply is, "The moon, stars, sun, birds when they fly, clouds... " By the time I get to clouds, they are staring at me as if I just stepped off an alien spaceship. But it usually ends the "sup" inquiry for the next time.
Have a polite day.

I always thought of "sup" as another word for "hi". So just respond by saying "hey" or "how's it goin'".

I say "Good Morning". At least someone is acknowledging you, albeit in a casual, virtually meaningless way.

I just say hi, usually they aren't really asking "what's up?"... it's just become an informal greeting, not a real "how are you today?" sort of thing
