the answer above by Servette is very rudimentary.

Switzerland consist mainly of three parts:
- the Alps (60%). highest peak is the Dufourspitze 4634m.
- the Middle land (30%). this isn't just flat land but hilly and also flat, with some lakes.
- Jura (10%). this is a hilly territory with hardly flat land and a highest peak of 1679m (Mont Tendre).

the vast majority of people live in the middle land, whilst the alps are not habitable except some valleys and alps resorts like Zermatt, Davos, St. Moritz etc. Jura is habited but only weakly.

terrain this maens that the switzerland is a good nation and have resousce to useis an independent country.

And the flat part isn't particularily flat.
