Religions are the way cultures rationalize why we are here, and look to for guidelines and means to set up their lives by. One of the things that makes us rise above the beasts of the fields is that we can rationalize. Not everything can be rationalized or (scientifically) explained. In early civilizations the rise and setting of the sun was explained as the sun being a god, for example: Ra, the Egyptian god. As we advanced in thinking and knowledge we now know of course that the sun is not a god , but just a large gaseous object. In the bible we are taught when it is appropriate to sell your daughter and slay your wife. most cultures today agree that this is unacceptable. Man also need to be right! The whole 'my god can beat up your god' kind of attitude. So, some religions believe still in holy wars. Others have abandoned this approach. You have a very deep and interesting question here. My feeling is that 'the truth is one, but the paths are many'. Feel free to correspond with me further on this issue!

How many religions are there? It's a difficult question.
e.g. Some native tribes serve a local God, A lot of Asiatic countries serve multiple God(s), Some religions serve one God, while many others serve millions of God(s), like the hindus. Others believe in a holy trinity which means 3 God(s) in 1.
Most of these religions teach doctrines that do benifit mankind, like, for example: Do not steal, Do not lie, You must love your brother like you love yourself, etc.
But if they really do follow their own teachings why are their wars and bloodshed in God's name?
It all comes down to one book, usually on the top seller list, The Holy Bible. In the Bible in 1 of John 4:8 it clearly states that God is love. And now think if God = Love why would anyone fight or go to war in his name?
What is the ONLY religion that does not go to war?
The Jehovah's Witnesses. Sounds like theyre doing the right thing.
Another bible text that pops into mind is Hebrews 11:1. It says that Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld. So, although you do not see God you can see his creation and what he's done for us. And thats why people dedicate so much of their lives for these "UNPROVEN" stories.
But research has showed that most of these biblical stories are in fact factual. The scrolls of the Dead Sea confirm them.

First of all, Salvation has nothing to do with religion, but every thing to do with Jesus Christ and what He did for us at Calvary for there is no other means by which we can be saved.( That may sound like a religion to you, but that's what the Bible says) So, if you want to find the one true "religion", It would be the entirety of the Bible. The reason we have so many religions in the world today is because people have pick and choosed what they wanted out of the Bible that would fit their lifestyle and have direguarded the rest of it. But the whole theme of the Bible is God's love for a fallen humanity and His redemptive plan to bring them back to Him. Down through the ages Satan has always tried to mess up that plan by using the same Humanity that God is trying to redeem. For instance, The reason that there is so much violence and killing amongst religions all started back in Bible days when God promised Abraham that He would make him a great nation. In order for that to happen, he would have to have a child. Abraham and Sarah tried to have a child for a long time and got impatient so they decided to help God out. Sarah gave Abraham her handmaid, Hagar, to have a child with and they had a son named Ishmael. Later on Sarah got pregnant and had a son whom God had promised to them and named him Isaac. God had already made promises concerning Isaac Which included the Law, The land of Israel, the Bible and that through his desendants would come the birth of the savior, Jesus. God did not leave Ismael out he also promised to make him a great nation and He has.Ismael desendants are the Arabs and Isaacs decendants are the Jews. The half brothers did not get along with each other.Galations 4:29 But as then he who was born after the flesh(Ismael) persecuted him who was born after the spirit(Isaac), even so it is now. The Arabs and the Jews have fought from that time til now. That's why you have fighting in the name of religion or "Holy Wars".They want what God had already promised through Issac. If Abraham and Sarah would have waited on God None of this would be going on. But Satan always makes it his business to try to cause people to loose faith in God. This is his way of messing up God's perpect plan for us. Hopes this helps you understand a bit more.

Violence is usually caused by lust, greed, and envy. The basics of all religions teach love, compassion, truth, justice, service to God and mankind.Unfortunately there are those that claim to follow religion but don't.Judge a person by his actions and not there words. As far as so many religions go.There are different levels of understanding of God according to the mentality of the person.Example, in school there are different levels of math arithmetic, geometry, algebra etc, so also there are different levels of God realization. They all have something to offer but others have more understanding ,realization, and knowledge .The truth of God can be tested threw ones experience.By following a certain regulated process of rules and regulations. If one follows the rules when driving he can get to his destination without diffuculty.Science has many theroies and things they can't explain. There were many athiests and hedonists that killed thousands Lenin, and Stalin.

I'm an Atheist but I have studied religion extensively. As far as I can tell this is explained by god as 'free will'. God wants people to be good, loving etc but they still have their own choice in the matter. The violence can not be thought of as god's will, but the will of those who supposedly follow Him. Some people place incredible faith in religion, especially those who are uneducated. People need meaning in their lives, but people are also violent and so they satisfy these two needs by justifying their wars and violent acts through God.

All religion is not about salvation. My sure as hell isn't. What do I need saved from?? We do not believe there is only ONE true religion. We acknowledge other gods exist, it just doesn't concern us. I have no desire to prove jack to anyone. I don't CARE what people believe. And I doubt anyone has killed anyone in the name of Heathenism in at least 1000 years.

Very generally, I think you will find that most members of each particular faith that professes non-violence or propounds it based on it's founding leader will tell you they are non-violent; it seems to be extremist's and political leaders that exploit extremism that benefit directly from, and therefore promote, violence. Even christian fundamentalist "Democratic" leaders.
Famously,Mahatma Ghandi certainly wasn't pro-war; neither was Jesus of Nazareth.
The Holocaust Museum details many peoples who, because of their faith, refused a violent course in the face of Nazi brutality, as does the journal of events in Rwanda, Malawi, Georgia(Russia), and more.
Perhaps more research on this is needed at your end?

To clear up something about religion. In heaven there is no religion. There are followers of God. Those that accept Jesus as there personal Savior so if people want to go on about religion and whose is right that is there thing. I go to church when ever possible , I believe that Jesus die on the Cross for me and my sins are paid for once and for all, It does not matter what my religion is. What matters is That my heart belongs to Jesus.
