Why is there so much tar in Cigarettes?

Any reason they even put it in there?

Tar is made from burning Tobacco grown here in North Carolina.
Hence the name the Tarheel state.

Tar is actually a by product of the burning of the cigarette - it is not really an ingredient as it is a chemical reaction.

I don't think it's put there. Must be a naturally occurring thing in the tobacco leaves.
